The Impact of Inward Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth, Employment, Exports and Regional Inequality in China

Abstract

The People’s Republic of China, with the extremely impressive record of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows, has experienced remarkable economic growth and development. This thesis studies the impact of inward FDI on economic growth, employment, exports and regional inequality after China’s economic growth since 1979. First of all, the author reviews the current situation of inward FDI within China. The development of FDI related policies and distribution of FDI are presented. Additionally, the relationships between inward FDI and the relevant variables, GDP, employment, exports and regional inequality, are discussed, as well as the relationships between these variables. There are two dimensions of regional inequality in this thesis, inequality within China and inequality within Jiangsu province. Jiangsu province is chosen as a study case because of its development pattern, which is also displaced in other provinces like Zhejiang and Shandong. A linear regression model is used to measure the relationships among variables within Jiangsu province, particularly the relationship of FDI with other variables.;기록적인 규모의 외국인 직접투자(FDI) 유입과 함께 중국은 놀라운 경제 성장과 발전을 이루었다. 본 논문은 1979년 이후 외국인의 국내 투자(Inward FDI)가 중국의 경제 성장, 고용, 수출 및 지역 불평등에 미치는 영향을 다루고 있다. 우선 저자는 현재 중국내 외국인의 국내 투자 상황에 대해 살펴보고 FDI 관련 정책 개발과 FDI 분포를 제시한다. 또한 외국인의 국내 투자와 관련 변수, GDP, 고용, 수출 및 지역 불평등 사이의 관계 뿐만 아니라 제시한 변수 사이의 관계에 대해서도 설명한다. 본 논문은 지역 불평등을 중국내의 지역 불평등과 장쑤성(Jiangsu)내의 지역 불평등, 이렇게 두 부분으로 분류하여 분석한다. 장쑤성은 특수한 개발 패턴때문에 본 논문의 연구 사례로 선정되였고 이 개발 패턴은 정장성(Zhejiang)과 산둥성(Shandong)을 포함한 타 지역에서도 변위되어 볼 수 있다. 장쑤성내 변수간의 관계를 측정하기 위해 선형 회귀 모델(linear regression model)을 사용한다. 특히, FDI와 다른 변수 사이의 관계를 측정할 때에도 사용된다.
