Abstract
This study aims to examine how the emphasis of mathematical communication skills, which is one of the world trends in school mathematics education, is reflected in the national 7th edition of textbooks and revised textbooks and activity books, as well as the composition and features of questions and sections regarding mathematical communication newly added to revised textbooks and activity books in comparison with the 7th edition of textbooks. To this end, this study presents the following study issues: 1. What are the compositions and features of questions and sections regarding mathematical communication contained in the five 7th edition textbooks selected for this study? 2. What are the compositions and features of questions and sections regarding mathematical communication contained in the five revised textbooks and activity books selected for this study respectively? 3. What are the features of questions and sections newly added to the revised textbooks and activity books for the development of mathematical communication skills? To address the study issues above, the five textbooks published in accord with the 7th national curriculum for mathematics - 「Middle School Mathematics 8-A」 and 「Middle School Mathematics 8-B」 - and the five based on 2007 revised curriculum - 「Middle School Mathematics 2」 and 「Middle School Mathematics Activity Book 2」 - were comparatively analyzed in view of mathematical communication. The findings from this study are as follows: First, as a result of analyzing questions regarding mathematical communication in the 7th edition textbooks, it turned out that most of the speaking and listening questions adopted D2(explanation) method, and that D4(discussion) method was adopted in the questions only twice in one certain textbook. D3(listening and understanding) method was never adopted in any of the textbooks. As to writing methods, both W3(explanation) and W4(presentation with graphical elements) were presented in all the five textbooks while W5(presentation in writing) method was used in three textbooks. Besides, W2(essay writing) was not adopted in any of the five textbooks. the five 7th edition textbooks selected for the study never presented mathematical communication questions in the texts in application of the open reading method. As a result of analyzing mathematical communication sections, it turned out that sections that featured the cooperative learning in a small group to solve problems through discussion with classmates were contained all in the five textbooks. The communication-related sections in utilization of the open reading method were contained in three of the five 7th edition textbooks. There was no separate section to develop writing skills such as essay questions. Second, as a result of analyzing questions regarding mathematical communication contained in each of the revised textbooks, it turned out that among the questions in utilization of the speaking and reading type, open questions regarding mathematical communication accounted for 50.16% on average. D2(explanation) questions and D4(discussion) questions were adopted relatively evenly over various contents while no D3(listening and understanding) question was used in any of the five textbooks. Among writing type questions, open questions regarding mathematical communication accounted for 26.96% on average. In four of the five revised textbooks selected for the study, open writing (W3(explanation), W4(presentation with graphical elements), and W5(presentation in writing)) questions accounted for more than 30% of the entire writing questions, and the distribution was relatively even over various contents. No essay question in utilization of W2(essay writing) type method was used in any of the texts. As to reading-type questions regarding mathematical communication, all the five revised textbooks contained questions, to which the given explanation was read to find out something wrong. This could be classified as questions in application of R2(reading and interpretation) type communication method. The frequency of questions was one to 10 times in each textbook, which is lower than questions regarding mathematical communication that adopted the speaking and listening method or writing method. Third, in comparison of questions and sections regarding mathematical communication contained in the 7th edition textbooks and revised textbooks and activity books, it turned out that the revised textbooks and activity books presented questions specifically to develop mathematical communication skills in the questions by using such titles as ‘discussion’, ‘essay question,’ and so forth. In addition, a variety of new sections such as ‘essay’ questions and ‘mathematical writing’ were added. While the 7th edition textbooks were limited to presenting reading materials to help understanding of or arousing interests in the learning contents, the revised textbooks and activity books provided opportunities to interpret and apply the reading materials. Based on the findings above, the conclusion of this study is as follows: First, although the revised textbooks and activity books contained various mathematical communication questions and sections compared to the 7th edition textbooks, interactive communication strategies in consideration of the other were hardly used. It is necessary to provide experiences of listening to other students, restructuring one's own understanding in a way of speaking, writing, and graphical elements, and checking if the contents are properly understood in order for mathematical communication as a form of interaction. Second, although the writing method included questions to develop logical expression skills, questions to cultivate expression skills to help others understand were insufficient. It is necessary to present enough writing experiences such as 'letter writing' in consideration of the other person. Third, most of the reading type sections of mathematical communication encourage solving the mathematical problems, in the presented way as it was, based on the given text. Thus, experiences of interpreting and applying reading materials in a free and diversified manner have yet to be provided. If various reading activities are presented in utilization of interactive strategies, reading skills for mathematical communication will be improved a lot. Lastly, suggestions for follow-up studies in addition to the study findings above are as follows: It is necessary to examine to what extent the existing middle school teachers are understanding mathematical communication questions and sections contained in revised textbooks and activity books and how they are making use of such methods in classes. In addition, such aspects as what types of mathematical communication questions and sections are mainly being used and what questions and sections are hardly used and why need to be examined so that they could be taken into consideration in the future development of mathematical communication questions and sections and in producing guidebooks for teachers.
