The purpose of this study is to profoundly understand children's thoughts and circumstances revealed in their outdoor sand play. The study analyzed what outdoor sand play means to children and also how they interact with their peer group to play various roles. The study examined children's behaviors while they were playing at the play ground especially in the sand area with an ethnographic research method. The research questions of this study are as follows. 1. What kind of sand play experiences do children get? 2. What are the roles of children when playing in the sand? The research was conducted at Blue, a full day, mixed age class of Rainvow kindergarten located in Seoul. Eleven 5-year-old children and nine 4-year-old children with three teachers were the subjects of the research. The data for this research were collected from September 1st, 2011 to October 7th, 2011, through 26 observations, formal and informal interviews, documentation, videotaping, and audio recording. The contents of participant observations and interview were transcribed in field notes. Collected data were encoded, categorized, and analyzed as Bogdan and Biklen(2006) suggested. The results from the research are as follows: Firstly, class Blue's outdoor sand play experiences were classified as creation, sensory satisfaction, healing, encounter, possession, play, freedom and fantasy. 'Creation' includes constructions and playgrounds. Constructions are new playmates children create with sand and Playgrounds are places children create with sand. 'Sensory Satisfaction' includes touch, hear and sight. Children experience various satisfaction through their senses when playing with sand. 'Healing' includes internal healing, rest and resilience. Children can ease their minds and play freely with less restriction and cure negative feelings and stresses. 'Encounter' includes meeting natural non-living things and living things. Children seek to find new friends in nature through sand play. 'Possesion' includes play tools and sharing. Children make their own play tools and show obsession for them. Since there is no restricted amount of using sand while playing, children happily share their sand with friends. 'Play' shows that children's sand play behavior which seems to be monotonic labour in adult's point of view, can be a very fun play to children. 'Freedom' includes can-get-dirty and choose-it-myself. Children play with less rules and restrictions when playing with sand and can choose any kinds of tools they want. The experience of 'Fantasy' means surreal pretend play and reveals through children's internalized fantasy. Secondly, the roles of class Blue when playing in the sand were classified as introducer, explorer, researcher, discoverer, helper, scholar and actor. 'Introducer' comes up with new ideas to direct the play in a fun and better way. 'Explorer' tends to seek and find new toys they can use for sand play. 'Expert' has ample experiences with certain play behavior and is able to share his/her skill and knowledge with play mates. 'Helper' pleasantly helps playmates when they are in need in various ways. 'Scholar' studies specific play events and things through mathematical and scientific thinking so sand play can be extended and developed. 'Actor' plays a dramatic role in a pretend play so that sand play could be even more exciting. Children's outdoor sand play time should be guaranteed since experiences children get during sand play bring satisfaction and accomplishment. Teachers can construct and provide abundant tools and environment to support children's active outdoor sand play. Teachers should understand and recognize children's emotions and feelings and help children alleviate their negative and unresolved issues through sand play.;본 연구는 유치원 실외 모래놀이 속에서 나타나는 유아들의 생활세계와 사고를 이해하여 유아들이 모래놀이장에서 갖는 경험에 대해 알아보고, 유아들 간의 상호작용 및 역할에 대해 문화기술적 연구 방법을 통해 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.
