사회적 합의과정을 강조한 과학과 관련된 사회·윤리적 문제(SSI)교수의 교육적 효과

Abstract

과학기술의 급격한 발달은 여러 가지 사회·윤리적 문제(socioscientific issues, SSI)를 야기하고 있다. 이에, 과학교육에서는 올바른 인성을 기반으로 SSI에 대한 합리적인 가치판단을 할 수 있는 능력을 함양하는 것을 강조해 오고 있다. 본 논문에서는 예비 과학교사들을 대상으로 SSI를 해결하는 과정에 사회적 합의형성을 강조함으로써 나타나는 교육적 효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 본 연구에는 4년제 대학에 재학 중인 3-4학년 예비 과학교사 18명이 참여하였다. 이들은 총 7주에 걸쳐 배아연구를 둘러 싼 찬반논쟁, 원자력 발전에 대한 지속적인 투자에 대한 찬반 논쟁, 기후변화에 대한 국제적 책임의 세 가지 SSI에 대한 함의 과정에 참여하였다. 수업 참여 후 반구조화된 개별 면담을 실시하여 예비 과학교사들이 사회적 합의 과정을 강조한 SSI 수업을 통해 배우고 느낀 점 및 합의과정에서 어려웠던 점 등에 관한 응답 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 사회적 합의과정을 강조한 SSI 수업은 지식적, 탐구 기능적, 정의적 측면에서의 교육적 효과를 나타내었다. 지식적 측면에서 예비 과학교사들은 SSI의 본성과 주제를 둘러싼 다양한 입장에 대한 이해가 높아졌으며, SSI와 관련된 과학지식을 습득하게 되었다고 응답하였다. 탐구 기능적 측면에서는 주장과 근거에 대해 비판적·분석적으로 사고할 수 있는 기술이 향상되었으며, 자신의 입장에 대한 근거를 수집하고 평가할 수 있는 능력, 합의를 위한 의사소통 능력 등이 향상되었다고 보고하였다. 마지막으로 정의적 측면에서는 합의과정을 강조한 SSI 토론을 통해 상대방을 배려하는 태도와 상대방 의견에 대한 포용력 등이 향상되었으며, SSI에 대한 관심이 높아져 가족이나 친구들과 SSI에 대해 자유롭게 토론할 수 있게 되었다고 응답하였다. 본 연구는 비교적 짧은 시간과 한정된 SSI에 대해 이루어 졌지만 충분한 시간과 다양한 주제로 후속 연구가 진행된다면 현재 교육과정에서 강조되고 있는 과학적 소양과 다양한 문제를 해결 할 수 있는 역량 있는 성숙한 시민양성에 도움을 줄 것으로 기대할 수 있겠다.;Since the radical development of science and technology has caused various socio-scientific issues (SSIs), science education came to focus on the cultivation of an ability to rationally make a decision on those SSIs. The purpose of this paper was to investigate educational effects of social consensus-oriented instruction during the debates on three SSIs (i.e. embryonic stem cell research, investment for the development of nuclear power generation, and international responsibility on climate change). Eighteen pre-service science teachers participated in the debates and were asked to reach a group consensus on SSIs over a period of seven weeks. Data sources included semi-structured individual interviews after the SSI instruction and audio/video tapes of classroom and group discussions. In results, the SSI instruction brought educational effects in the aspects of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. First, the participants responded that they became more aware of the nature of SSI and multiple perspectives surrounding the issues, and obtained related scientific content knowledge. Second, they reported that they became more capable of applying skepticism to constructing their argument and examining supporting evidences. In addition, they felt improvement on information management and evaluation skills, and communication skills for reaching a consensus. Lastly, they stated that they became more sympathetic and open to other perspectives, and sensitive to SSIs.
