방황 좌절 극복의 문제

Abstract

Williams는 극작의 초기부터 방황하는 인간상을 주제로 글을 써왔다. 인간의 밝은 면보다는 어두운 면을 깊이 통찰한 작가의 태도는 불행했 던 성장 과정과 더불어 비극적 인생관에 근거한다. 즉 지상의 모든 죄악이 애초부터 지상의 불완전성에 기인하는 것이라고 Williams는 해설한다. 우주는 불완전한 것이며 인간은 이 속에서 방황하다가 결국은 비애를 안고 사라진다는 것이다. 또한 인간의 행위는 사회의 모순과 위선에 의해 제한 받으며, 어떤 인간도 자아를 완전히 극복할 수 없다는 것이 Williams의 요점이다. 작가는 역설적이긴 하지만 인간의 생은 인간이 이상으로 여기는 완전성의 추구이며, 완벽에 대한 끊임없는 도전이라고 보고 있다. 이 논문에서는, Williams의 방황하는 인간상과 좌절된 삶 속에서 적극적인 생을 추구하려는 인간상이 잘 나타나 있는 Orpheus Descending, The Night of the Iguana, 그리고 Small Craft Warnings 등에서 좌절과 극복의 문제를 다루었다. Orpheus Descending에서는 사회 안의 인간을 살펴 보았다. Williams의 작중 인물들은 사회의 outsider에 속한다. Orpheus의 outsider들의 방황의 요인은 corruption 과 loneliness에 기인한다고 본다. 이를 극복하기 위해 corruption에 대한 자각과 corrupt되지 않으려는 노력, 그리고 인간 관계가 도외시 되는 사회에서 인간을 구원하는 가장 큰 힘이 사랑과 이해임을 보여준다. The Night of the Iguana에서는 우주 안의 인간을 살펴보았다. 모든 인간은 태어날 때부터 방황하는 존재라고 보는 작가의 운명론적 비관론에 근거를 두고 살펴보았다. 지상의 인간을 방황하게 하는 요인은 죄의식이라고 본다. 이를 신념과 의지로써 극복한, 정신적인 세계를 대표하는 Hannah, 쾌락과 부패의 세계에 만족하는 육적인 Maxine, 그리고 이두 세계를 방황하는 Shannon 등 3 인간상을 보여준다. Small Craft Warnings는 self-revelation이라는 독특한 방식을 통해, 자아의 문제를 다루고 있다. 자아를 방황케 하는 요인은 self-pity와 self-contempt라고 보고, 이에 대해 self-respect와 pride를 갖는 마음이 중요하다고 보았다. 또한 고독으로부터 탈피와 더불어 선택한 고독 속에서 자기를 응시할 수 있는 용기가 필요하다고 본다. 이 외에 3 작품이 공통적으로 환상, 예술의 세계를 인간의 좌절을 극복 시켜 주는 정신 영역으로 제시했다. 그것은 혼탁한 외부 세계와의 격리를 가져오고, 격한 감정을 순화 시키는 작용을 하고 있다. 이 지상에서 완전한 해탈은 실현될 수 없는 것이지만, 인간은 끊임없이 노력해야 하며, 중요한 것은 극복되고자 노력하는 자세라고 볼 수 있다. Williams는 그의 비관적인 삶 속에서도 작품을 통해 우리에게 ‘삶의 의미를 부여하는 노력’, ‘좌절을 극복하려는 용기’가 얼마나 가치 있는가를 보여주고 있다.;Williams has tried to write about the fugitive kind from the beginning of his career. He had an insight into the dark side of man's nature. it is based on his own miserable life and tragic view of life. The sins of the earth are in its incompletion, Williams tells us; the universe is fragmented and can born into it is born into incompletion, human action is defined by contradiction and hypocrisy of society and no one can cope with his self completely. Paradoxically man's life is a pursuit of perfection regarded as an ideal and a constant attempt to compensate for this lack of wholeness, Williams tells us. In such plays as Orpheus Descending, The Night of the iguana, Small Craft Warnings, men who pursue the positive life in the despair as well as fugitive kind are portrayed vividly. I have attempted to study the problem of frustration and salvation in these three plays. In Orpheus Descending the man in the society is presented. Williams' protagonists are outsiders in the society in Orpheus the factors which make them outcasts are corruption and loneliness. He shows us that the most desirable things for human beings in this inhuman society are love and understanding and an endeavor to stay away from corruption. The Night of the iguana is about the man in the universe, it is based on the author's deterministic view of existence. The factor which makes man an outcast in the universe is the sense of guilt Williams shows us 3 human types in this play; the spiritual Hannah who has had to struggle for salvation, the physical Maxine who has experienced satisfaction only through sex and corruption, and the human Shannon who is confused between these two women. Small Craft Warnings deals with self through the unique technique of self-revelation. The author suggests here that self-pity and self-contempt are two factors that separate self from the man; while self-respect and pride integrate them. As for the solitude a man faces, Williams seems to prefer a man in search of his own identity in solitude to a man who attempts to evade this solitude. Besides them. Williams suggests the world of fantasy and art as the realm of salvation. It isolates a man from the inhuman reality which surrounds him and purifies his emotion and spirit. Williams searches for a mode of salvation, but he has not as yet completely resolved the problem. And it goes without saying that complete salvation in this earth is impossible. But man has to struggle constantly toward it. Important thing is his ceaseless effort to reach the state of salvation. Williams in his sixties seems to say in his plays that in spite of his tragic vision of life an human endeavor to bring meaning to life and to find salvation is of great value for us.
