숨쉬는 이야기

Abstract

예술은 공명(共鳴, resonance)이다. 본인에게 있어 예술은, 그것을 향유하는 작가와 관객에게 전해지는 울림, 개인적이거나 혹은 사회적인 의미의 공유, 공감이기 때문이다. 그렇다면 예술 작품은 이러한 울림이 현현하는 ‘장소’이다. 이 장소는 유령, 이 비가시적인 가시성을 어떻게 맞이하고, 용서하고, 그 이후를 상상하는가를 작업이라는 행위로 삼고 실행하는 접점으로서의 장소이다. 본인은 작품을 통해 관객과 교섭, 조우함으로써 공명이 가능할 것인가를 가늠해 본다. 본 논문에서 본인은 본인의 예술 행위의 시작부터 그 과정들을 돌아보고 개념화하고 있다. 이것은 타인과의 조우, 새로운 삶을 얘기하는 장소로서의 작품이 지니는 경계성과 그 담론적 특성을 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 본 논문은 본인의 죽음 경험, 즉 ‘비존재와의 만남’에서 시작하고 있다. 본인은 삶과 죽음, 그 순수한 ‘사이’ 공간인 ‘경계 위의 삶’을 유영하는 존재로 ‘유령’을 만난다. 이 만남은 더 이상 존재하지 않는, 또는 아직 존재하지 않는, 그 없음으로 인해 있는 ‘부재의 존재함’의 순간적 통찰이다. 본인은 이러한 사유를 자크 데리다의 『마르크스의 유령들』을 인용하며 풀어가고자 했다. 그리고 모든 것은 항상 삶으로 되돌아 옴을, 삶은 그물망과 같이 끊임 없이 이어져 있음을 바라본다. 여기, ‘삶의 온갖 이음’에서 본인의 죽음 경험을 생물학적인 것에서 개념적인 것으로, 사적인 일상에서 문화·역사적 맥락으로 확대시켜 유령과의 만남, 전유(專有, appropriation)의 실천적 행위를 본인의 예술 언어로써 어떻게 공고히 할 것인가에 대해 사유하고 고민했다. 이러한 개념들에 연계된 본인의 예술적 사고를 ‘고백의 언어’, ‘은유의 언어’, ‘대화’라는 단어로 의미화했다. 그리고 작업 방식으로 글, 그림, 사진, 영상을 사용함을 밝히고, 이것들의 의미를 롤랑 바르트, 자크 데리다, 루돌프 아른하임, 크리스티앙 메츠의 이론을 근거로 분석하고자 했다. 본인은 사적 기억과 공적인 역사, 개인의 경험과 사회적 이슈의 관계에서 일어나는 소재를 바탕으로 작업해 왔다. 삶과 기억 속의 장소들은 구체적으로 작업에 투영되고, 개인의 기억과 사회의 기억간의 연결을 장소를 통해 시도했다. 그리고 이러한 장소에서 포착하는 존재의 순간들, 진실된 목소리, 작은 속삭임들을 이야기했다. 이처럼 본인의 작품은 끊임없이 이야기가 생성되는 장소(site)이다. 이 장소들, 본인의 발언은 공간에서의 청취로부터 시작했다. 마치 숨을 들이 쉬듯이 다른 이의 이야기를 듣고, 그의 이야기와 내가 만나 새롭게 구성된 이야기를 숨을 내쉬듯이 발화했다. 이렇게 호흡처럼 부풀어 오르고 가라앉는 대화를 시도하고, 침묵함으로써 공명이 이루어지기를 기다려 보았다. 본인은 작품이 본인과 타인, 세계를 잇는 친밀한 통로가 되고, 예술 작품으로 지은 아름다운 대화, 완전한 소통이 이루어지기를 꿈꾼다.;Art is resonance. This is because art is the echo that rings to the author and the audience, the sharing of personal or social meanings and is what we empathize. This means that art work is the ‘place’ that incarnates echo. This place is the point where the work of imagining the afterwards by investigating how the ghosts, the non-visibilities should be met and forgiven. The person in subject uses the work to interact and encounter with the audience and judges whether they can resonate or not. The person in subject of this thesis looks back on the processes from the beginning of the artistic behaviors. This aims in revealing the discussion characteristics and the limitations that the work has as the place which encounters with others and speaks about new life. This study begins from the death experience of the subject, in other words, from ‘the meeting with the non-existence’. The subject meets the ‘ghost’ as an existing form which space walks between life and death, and the ‘life above limits’ in the ‘between’. This meeting is a sudden insight which does not exist, yet exists or the ‘existence of the absentee’ due to the non-existence. The subject uses ‘Mark’s Ghosts’ written by Jacques Derrida to solve these issues. Then the subject sees everything as something that always comes back to life, and that life is infinitely connected like a net. The death experience of the subject in ‘all sorts of life connection’ is expanded to a cultural*historical context in the private lives as a concept from biology. The subject then states the facts and troubles on how the practical behavior of the meeting and appropriation with ghosts should be announced in artistic language. The artistic thoughts that are linked with these concepts were signified in words as ‘confession’, ‘metaphor’, ‘dialogue’. As a working method, the subject revealed the uses of writing, pictures, photos and videos, and decided to analyze their meanings based on the theories of Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Rudolf Arnheim and Christian Metz. The subject worked based on the topics that occur in relation to private memories, public history, personal experience and society issues. The places in life and memories are concretely reflected in the works, and the connection between personal memories and societal memories were attempted using location. Furthermore, the captured moments of the existing beings, actual voice and their small whispers were talked about. The work of the subject is therefore a site where never ending stories are created. These sites and the announcements began by listening within the sites. Stories told by others should be listened as we breathe, and the new stories made when the story and I met were told as I breathed out. This is how the communication, that rises and falls like when breathing, was attempted and waited for the reasoning when quiet. The subject became the friendly passage that links with others and the world, and dreams of the beautiful conversation and perfect communication made by the artistic work.
