씨앗을 통한 상징적 이미지 연구

Abstract

Art cannot be a copy of reality and has never be one. Even if art uses a realistic technique such as a movie, photo, recording or realistic painting, it involves an allusion. Allusion and symbol are the starting point for art. Allusion means what a work of art implies or alludes to. Art can allude to some thoughts by reminding people of a certain atmosphere or emotions of the artist. Allusion is the element of a symbol. Fine works of art is not only related to the association of an artist but creating a form that touches the senses and feelings of viewers. In other words, art derives a hidden world from our own experiences. In my work, seeds were used to describe such experiences. They are related to the coincidental and personal associations and also embody senses and feelings. The first work starts with giving shape to countless lives within a seed. The vitality within the seed finally sprouts, puts down roots, blossoms and bears fruits. Also, all the stories about spreading such countless seeds are implied in such a grain of seed. Seemingly a seed is tiny, stiff and weak but something beyond it is silently but obviously alive within it. A seed becoming active and strong to form a living thing makes one feel that there is an infinite of possibilities and passion for hope within it. Seeing such seeds, I, through my works, wanted to talk about living, life, dream, hope, possibilities and modest sacrifice by which a thick bark dies for a new seed leaf to come up. In this thesis, I dealt with allusion and symbol as a principle of art and did research on what kinds of diverse images the seeds, as a symbolic figuration, allude to in order to lay the theoretical groundwork for my work and to find a path to follow in my artistic career.;예술이란 현실의 복사본이 될 수도 없고, 된 적도 없었다. 영화나 사진, 실제 소리의 녹음, 또는 사진처럼 사실적인 기법의 회화라 하더라도, 그것을 예술로 만드는 것은 그 안에 암시라는 특징이 들어 있기 때문이다. 암시와 상징은 예술이 궁극적으로 시작되는 출발점이다. 암시란 작품이 어떤 것을 시사하거나 넌지시 말하는 것을 뜻한다. 예술은 특정한 분위기나 예술가가 가진 감정들을 떠올리게 할 수 있고 그렇게 함으로써 어떤 생각들을 넌지시 말하는 것이다. 상징은 암시성을 본령으로 한다. 좋은 예술은 예술가 자신의 연상 작용과 관계되어 있을 뿐 아니라 보는 사람의 감각과 느낌이라는 더 깊은 줄기에도 닿아있는 형식을 창조한다. 즉, 예술은 우리로부터 스스로의 경험에서 숨겨진 세계를 이끌어 내는 것이다. 본인의 작업에서 씨앗이라는 소재는 그것을 경험하는 대로 묘사하였다. 그것은 내 안에 있는 우연적이고 개인적인 연상 작용과 관계되어있을 뿐 아니라 감각과 느낌을 담아낸 소재였다. 첫 작품의 시작은 한 알의 씨 안에 있는 무수한 생명을 형상화한 것으로 시작되었다. 씨 안에 내재되 있는 생명력이 결국엔 싹을 틔우고 뿌리를 내려 꽃과 열매를 맺는다. 또 그와 같은 무수한 씨앗을 퍼트리기까지 모든 이야기가 그 한 알의 씨 안에 함축되어있다. 씨앗은 겉으로 보이기에는 작고 딱딱하며 미력한 모습이지만, 그 이상의 것이 그 안에 잠잠히 그러나 분명하게 살아 숨쉬며 있다. 생명체를 이루기 위해 능동적이고 강인해진 씨앗은 내면에 무한한 가능성과 희망을 향한 열정이 있음을 느끼게 한다. 이러한 씨앗을 보며 삶, 생명, 꿈, 소망, 가능성 그리고 겉껍질이 깨어지고 죽어야만 새로운 떡잎이 솟아오를 수 있는 그러한 겸손한 희생을 작품을 통해 이야기하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 예술의 작동원리로써의 암시와 상징에 대해서 다루고 상징적 형상화로써 씨앗이 어떠한 여러 이미지들을 암시하는지에 대해 연구함으로 본인 작업에 대한 이론적 토대를 마련하고 앞으로의 창작활동에 있어 나아갈 길을 모색하고 도움을 받는 계기가 되고자 하였다.
