Abstract
The present study was motivated from a growing need for effective English listening instruction in Korea. Although dictogloss has been thought to be beneficial in many listening classrooms, the benefits of dictogloss based on different genre have not yet been thoroughly investigated in second language listening research. As such, the need of the study aimed at looking into the effects of dictogloss in terms of different genre according to learners’ proficiency level on listening skills and their attitude toward dictogloss was highly on the rise. The study was undertaken with highly controlled setting. First, total of 60 Korean middle school students were selected and they were allocated randomly into two homogeneous groups according to different genre: narrative and descriptive. Then, each group was subdivided according to their pre-listening test scores: higher-level and lower-level groups. The study has been conducted over 8-week period, excluding one-week training sessions that immediately preceded it. The results were compiled and analyzed quantitatively in order to investigate the effects of dictogloss depending on different genre. Also, the participants' attitude toward dictogloss activity was examined. The findings obtained from the study are threefold: First, both of two groups-narrative and descriptive-benefited from engaging in dictogloss tasks. However, no statistically significant differences were found within groups, which can be interpreted that dictogloss task might help improve L2 learners' English listening skills regardless of the different genre. Then, varying results were obtained depending on learners' own language proficiency level. Lower-level learners of both groups showed improvement on their post-listening test, which represents statistically significant differences in listening skills. Besides, as a result of the effect as to dictogloss depending on different genre showed a significant difference on the bottom-up processing. In the case of narrative genre, there is a statistically significant differences on top-down processing and descriptive genre, only a lower-level group has the differences on bottom-up and top-down processing. Second, the result states that participants' overall attitude toward dictogloss activity inclined to lean toward the positive side of the spectrum on both genre, but there were intergroup differences depending on the participants' proficiency levels. The proposed reason for this is because learning cooperatively may have affected positively toward both of higher-level group students and lower-level group students as higher-level group students took the lead from the front and form a competitive environment in good faith. Moreover, lower-level group students have established more interests toward group activities and it made them to engage in activity lively as they were able to immediately solve problems by getting feedbacks from discussion in-between groups. In addition, the in-depth survey results implied that most participants who engaged in this study were satisfied with dictogloss task in that they could peek into the minds and ideas of other students, learn the importance of listening correctly and considerately, and enhance their confidence in English listening through group activity. The increase in their confidence and interests in English listening is especially significant part to note since students will potentially develop, approach, and utilize the best study method for them among diverse English learning method. One more interesting outcome of this survey was that this activity advantaged the narrative group for their bottom-up processing, and the descriptive group for their top-down processing respectively. More studies are required assess this outcome to be systematically generalized. A number of caveats need to be noted regarding the present study. The small sample size impedes the generalization of the results obtained from this study, and the 8-week treatment is by no means sufficient length of time to suggest the effectiveness of a particular task. However, the results of this study lead to important pedagogical implications in Korean educational settings. First, L2 listening learners can improve their listening skills and foster positive attitude toward dictogloss activity through different dictogloss tasks. Also, the listening texts used in this study and method of forming groups need to be more carefully adjusted, by taking L2 learner’s language proficiency level into account. Lastly, it is highly suggested that teachers and researcher should strive to devise a wider variety of dictogloss activities that are appropriate for learners of different proficiency levels in different contexts to systematically tackle and confirm the validity of this activity and to minimize possible artifacts and flaws in this study.;세계화라는 시대적 흐름을 반영해 최근 우리나라 영어 교육 정책은 실질적인 의사소통능력 향상에 초점을 맞추고 있다.
