Abstract
This dissertation presents a multi-level analytical investigation to explain the growth effects of FDI, in the context of India. FDI is expected to benefit the economic growth of host country by easing the transfer of valuable technology and know-how, fostering links with local firms, in addition to direct capital financing. However, previous studies have shown that FDI-growth nexus is not clear either theoretically or empirically. Against this backdrop, the current research was designed to illuminate the causal relationship between FDI and economic growth in India. The focus on India is based both on its astonishing growth performance and rapidly increasing FDI inflows during the last decade. To provide a comprehensive analysis, this study takes a multi-level approach. First, total factor productivity of India is estimated, using a translog production function within the Solow’s growth accounting framework. The impact of FDI inflows on total factor productivity, together with international trade values, is examined in the time series framework, using macro data of India from 1978 to 2010. Then by applying a panel cointegration model with vector error correction mechanism, the study explores the two-way link between FDI and economic growth for a panel of six sector-wise data for 2000-2010 of India. The analyses reveal three important features: (a) FDI has positive and significant effects on the increase of TFP at aggregate level and also on the increase of GDP at disaggregate level in India; (b) the TFP growth is accounting for an increasing and important proportion of output growth in India; (c) the impact of trade liberalization does not have positive effect on the increase of productivity in India. Policy implications and suggestions for future research are presented.
