Shirley에 나타난 Charlotte Bronte의 리얼리즘

Abstract

Charlotte Bronte stands for realism in Shirley, and focuses on women's problems in presenting the realities of life and in grasping the true nature of it. The reason Shirley has been underestimated was that realism focused on women's problems couldn't have been criticized properly. To criticize Shirley properly, therefore, "Feminist Criticism" is used in this thesis. Since the history of human beings began, women's status gradually declined, and after the Industrial Revolution women degenerate into plaything for men. The upper and middle class women were proud of being idle and of being ornaments, while working-class women suffered from Low pay and hard work. Women were supposed to be persevering, submissive, modest, shy and beautiful. It was regarded as the law of Nature that woman had been formed to please man. Shirley was based on such an era and society. Gradually, women recognized their degraded status, so they began to struggle to get out of their idleness and dependence upon their male protectors and to recover their dignity and rights as human beings. Nowadays this struggle is being continued. The issues upon which feminists of today are working are basically the same as those which Charlotte Bronte wrote about as early as 1849. In Shirley the realities which women of those days faced are successfully described. Men treat women as inferiors without taking into account their position and think that women have to act womanly. Men dominate public and private life and prevent women from participating in the men's world. Difficulties which women faced in society are pointed out through Caroline's situation and observation. The main function of Caroline in Shirley is to present the realities of women's lives. Judging it impossible to marry Robert, Caroline begins to doubt the norms of society and convention which she had formerly considered natural. She points out the absurdity that society permits women no meaning in life but marriage, and challenges the general idea that women's parts are sacrifice, service, modesty, and submission. Through Caroline's observation it is indicated that old maids are neglected and sneered at because of prejudice in society which is unreasonable, and it is objected to that they can't get jobs in spite of their ability. It is advanced to revalue the Lives of single women and make a plea for giving honourable occupations to them so that they may lead a satisfactory existence. Caroline is so shy, submissive, and devoted that she can be categorized as a traditional woman who lives in convention. Through Caroline realities of women are presented. By examining the traditional woman and convention through Caroline, the traditional woman, C. Bronte makes the tone of reproach on convention and tradition sharper. While Caroline is a traditional woman, Shirley is a new woman. Revolting against the female ideal of Angel made artificially by men, Charlotte Bronte created Shirley as a realistic woman. She has insight and ability to decide and to act, and does business with her own right view and ability. Moreover, she pursues self-realization independently and makes her own wav, not as a woman, but as a human being, throwing off the yoke of convention. Describing Shirley who has much of the so-called "masculine" elements as an attractive woman, Charlotte Bronte shows that women are not like the images men made of them, that women actually have so-called unwomanly elements, and that women who have so-called masculine elements can be attractive if one can see them without prejudice. Charlotte Bronte gave new vision to women by freaking the idea that women must be "womanly" and by presenting Shirley, who throws off the yoke of convention and norm, as an ideal woman. In view of today, it is true that Charlotte Bronte had a felt limitations. But, when many writers accepted the degraded status of women of those days as natural, she thought that it was but an appearance convention had made, believing in women's potentiality. She could, therefore, grasp the reality of woman and present her new vision by studying the realities women faced. It is the excellence of the author's realism which analyzes and acutely criticizes the realities of women, which grasps the true nature of women, which revolts against the unrealistic characterization of women in literature through satire of the female ideal of Angel or saint, and which, therefore, creates realistic women.;C. Bronte는 Shirley에서 리얼리즘을 標榜하고 있는데, 삶의 諸般 現實을 提示하고 그 本質을 把握함에 있어서 女性問題에 重點을 맞추고 있다. 지금까지 Shirley가 過少 評價되어 온 것은 女性問題에 重點을 맞춘 리얼리즘을 바로 評價하기 어려웠기 때무닝라고 보아, 本論文은 "feminist criticism"을 使用함으로써 Shirley에 대한 正堂한 評價를 내려 보고자 한다. 人類의 歷史가 始作된 以來로 점차 하락되어 오던 女性의 地位는 산업혁명이 일어난 후 남자의 노리개로 轉落되어 있었다. 중류이상의 여성들은 아무 일도 하지 않고 裝飾物로 存在하는 것이 자랑이었으며 근로층의 女性들은 抵賃과 重勞動에 시달려야 했다. 여자는 어떤 어려움이 있어도 忍耐하고 服從하며 겸손하고 수줍고 아름다워야 했으며 남성을 기쁘게 하기 위해 存在해야 한다는 것은 自然의 法則으로 받아들여지고 있었다. 이와같은 시대와 社會를 배경으로 Shirley는 쓰여졌다. 점차 女性들은 자신의 전락된 상태를 깨닫고 나태와 남성 의존에서 벗어나 人間으로서의 尊嚴性과 權利를 얻기 위해 투쟁하기 시작하였으며 오늘날에도 이 투쟁은 계속되고 있다. 그런데 오늘날 女性解放論者들이 重要課題로 삼고있는 문제점들이야말로 C. Bronte가 이미 1849년 당시에 Shirley에서 主張하였던 것이다. 當時의 女性現實은 Shirley에 잘 묘사되어 있다. 南星들은 지위의 고하에 관계없이 여성을 남성보다 劣等하게 취급하며 여성은 "女性다운" 行動만을 해야 한다고 생각한다. 男子들은 公的, 史的生活에서 支配的이며 여성들이 그들의 세계에 끼어드는 것을 排除한다. 女性이 社會속에서 겪는 어려움은 주로 Caroline을 통해 提示되며 Caroline이 Shirley에서 갖는 重要한 存在意義는 女性의 現實에 대한 認識을 보여주는데 있다. Robert와 결혼하지 못하리라고 判斷한 후 Caroline은 지금까지 當然한 것으로 받아들여오던 사회규범과 因習에 懷疑를 품기 시작한다. 여자는 결혼외에는 生에서 아무런 意義를 가질 수 없게 되어 있는 社會의 不條理ff 指摘하며, 犧牲과 奉仕와 謙遜과 服從이 女性의 本分이라는 通念에 도전한다. 또한 Caroline의 고찰을 통해 독신녀들이 社會의 偏見으로 無視되고 조롱받으며 사는 것이 不合理하다는 것과 그들이 능력을 가지고 있음에도 不拘하고 就業의 機會가 없음을 반박한다. 女子의 存在意義를 결혼에만두던 社會에서 獨身女의 삶을 再評價하였고 家庭밖에서 취업의 기회가 주어져야 한다고 主張한 것은 매우 진일보한 것이었다. 이처럼 여성의 現實은 주로 Caroline을 통해 제시된다. 그녀는 수줍고 순종적이며 獻身的인 女性으로서 因習안에 살고 있는 "傳統的 女人像"이라고 할 수 있다. 그런데 이러한 Caroline을 通해 女性의 現實이 提示되는 것이다. C. Bronte는 전통적인 여인을 통해서 그녀가 속하는 범주인 전통적 여인상을 再檢討하고 傳統과 因習을 재검토함으로써 社會의 因習에 대한 批判의 論調를 더 날카롭게 하였다. Caroline이 전통적 여인상인데 반해 Shirley는 새로운 女人像이다. C. Bronte는 남자들에 의해 人爲的으로 만들어진 천사와 같은 "理想的" 女人像에 반기를 들고, 造作되지 아니한 女性自體로서의 "realistic"한 女人像으로 Shirley를 창조하였다. 그녀는 洞察力과 決斷力과 行動力을 지니고 있으며 뚜렷한 觀과 能力을 가지고 사업에 관여한다. 또한 獨立的으로 自我實現을 추구하며 因習의 굴레를 벗어나, 女性이기 以前에 한 人間으로서 獨自的인 길을 걷는다. 소위 "남성적"인 요소를 많이 지닌 Shirley를 魅力的인 女人으로 創造해 냄으로써 C. Bronte는 女性은 남자들이 만들어 놓은 그런 이미지의 人間들이 아니며, 실제로 女性들은 女性답지 않다고 생각되는 點들을 가지고 있고, 偏見을 버리고 본다면 남성적이라고 일컬어지는 要素를 가진 女性이 魅力的일 수 있다는 점을 보여주는 것이다. 女性은 "여성다와야"한다는 개념을 무너뜨리고, Shirley처럼 因習과 規範을 벗어나 생각하며 生動하는 女性을 理想的 女性으로 提示함으로써 女性에게 새로운 "vision"을 提示한 것이다. 오늘날의 觀點에서 볼 때 C. Bronte가 當代의 思考方式을 完全히 뛰어넘지 못하고 있는 限界點을 보여주는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 轉落되어 있던 當時의 女性들의 상태를 當然한 것으로 받아들인 다른 많은 作家들과는 달리, C. Bronte는 여성의 潛在力을 믿고 여성이 當代에 보여주고 있는 모습들은 因習이 만들어 놓은 "appearance"에 不過하다고 보았다. 그리하여 社會의 諸般 現實들 特히 女性이 處한 現實을 예리하게 分析 批判하고 여성의 本質을 把握하였으며, 當時 文學속에서 지나치게 現想化되어 있어서 사람이라기 보다는 天使나 聖人에 가까운 비사실적인 人物로 묘사되던 女人像에 排轉하고 그에 대치되는 사실적인 女性을 創造한 것은 C. Bronte의 리얼리즘의 優秀性이라고 아니할 수 없다.
