Abstract
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(Ma가 Twain), The Catcher in the Rye(J.D.Salinger), The Adventures of Augie March(Saul Bellow)의 주인공·서술기법·구조·주제 등을 살펴보았다. Huckleberry Finn, Catcher in the Rye, Augie March는 편력을 겪은 인간의 자아성찰에 더 많은 비중을 둔다. There can be no question that the picaresque novel is a literary form-that flourished in Spain in the latter part of the sixteenth and the first decades of the seventeenth centuries; that it spread soon after to France, England, Germany, Holland, and elsewhere;that it is the adventurous story of a rogue's life, usually told in the first person; that is episodic account of wanderings, adversity, and ingenious role-playing incorporates a satiric view of society. While it is worthy of note that with all the many faces and various colors that the novel has shown to the world during the last century and a half, an impressive number of novels continue to organize their characters and their words in something akin to the picaresque situation. So it seens reasonable to assume that the picaresque novel is not simply a long-finished episode in literary history but rather a permanent addition to the storehouse of literary resourses, capable of regenerating and transforming itself in a surprising variety of new environments . To treat picaresque as a tradition I select three American novels which I consider representatives of the picaresque of today, that is, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1885), The Catcher in the Rye(1951), and The Adventures of Augie March(1953). And I examine individual works from the standpoint of the generic attributes of the picaresque genre. Huck, Holden, and Augie are common to the aspects that they are the picaro - the underdog, the little man, the fellow a bit worse off than the average, who has his adventures and troubles and somehow just survives . Without any solid background of family they are the self-reliant creature in themselves. As the picaro, they move horizontally through space and vertically through society, journeying down the river, into the large city, anf the continents. They observe a number of collective conditions : social classes, professions, cities, and nations. Their premature exposure to the world coinsides with a state of "natural" ignorance, and they proceed to discover all values anew. And these rogue's gallery is a standing invitation to satire. Huck, Holden, and Augie learn about the world by means of satirical awareness. It seems clear that their stories of journey are creative comments on modern society and on how it felt to be a man among men. And it is also true that the portrayal of collective conditions and vices is tempered with humour and the recognition of individual complexity. The picaro of today, Huck, Holden, and Augie. neither join nor actually reject his fellow men. They show us their satirical perception of human absurdities and the sense of fellowship with humanity. There lies the sign of some changes the picaresque has underwent by its perpetual reassessment and reconstitution. Huck, Holden, and Augie do grow, learn, and change through their adventurous journey . The picaro of old days appeared as a fixed personality who never substantially altered during the course of his varied experiences. He learned but he did not change. Once the picaro had learned all the rules of the game of the society, he went on to play with skill and confidence, but nothing had happened to him inside, no development had taken place. It was the world that we were supposed to see not his world - his inner life, his psychological complexity, his moral growth or decline. So the picaro was, of necessity, a fixed, undeveloping character. But the shift in focus from the man's adventures to the man himself is one of the most outstanding aspects of three picresque novels of today. A process of internalization is clearly at work in The Huckleberry Finn, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Adventures of Augie March. Thus the loosely connected episodic plot has more organic unity because the simplicity of the picaresque novel full of inconsequently interspersed and apparently aimless adventures is further modified by the story's climactic moments of moral struggles of the protagonist. In fact, the picaresque plot is based on a series of conventional climaxes of change. The sense of life which experience impresses upon Huck, Holden, and Augie is a feeling of being tossed at random from event to event. And we recognize easily enough in the passages where we see them wandering from place to place the freedom and the quest that are the burden of modren novelistic heroes. Huck, Holden, and Augie do not want to gradually vanish as an individual and dissolve into a role, a social status, a mask. It is the conviction underlying in these works that while life is hard, life is also good. Experience is a positive thing - the three picaroes are constantly seeking more of it. The picaro as an ongoing philosopher, as a constant discoverer and rediscoverer, experimenter and doubter where every value or norm is concerned never ceases to learn. Each person or action, is for him a possible example. In the midst of bankrupt revolutions and the orthodoxy of disbelief the powerless antihero and non-conformist of Huck, Holden, and Augie show us the man truly risking, or even shaping, their own lives. And it is the perspective the authors of three works offer to the narrative art in which society and the individual could be seen.
