1920년대 번역 미국소설 연구

Abstract

國文學史의 "近代"를 서술하는데 있어 서구 충격의 문제는 "傳統性" 못지않게 규명되어져야 할 문제이다. 특히 美國文學의 영향을 그중 가장 도외시되어 온 部分이었으므로, 本橋에서는 20年代 美國 飜譯小說에 重點을 두어 國文學史的인 立場에서 그것을 밝혀보고자 한다. 美國은 우리나라에서 西歐중 최초의 문호개방국이었음에도 불구하고, 文學에 있어서는 다른 西歐 文學보다 그 移入量이 적었으며, 小說은 特히 1920年代에 이르러서야 비로소 구체적인 모습을 드러냈다. 그것은 주로 포우(E.A.Poe), 오·헨리(O.Henry), 헨리 반다익(Henry Vandyke) 等의 作品들에 集中된 것이었다. 이 作品들을 內容別로 간추리면, 첫째, 진지하고 비극적인 삶의 認識을 담은 作品, 둘째, 日常의 斷面을 다룬 作品, 셋째, 계급문학적인 作品, 넷째, 기독교적인 內容의 作品, 다섯째, 기타 통속소설 들이다. 또한 이들의 장르는 주로 단편 소설들이며, 1인칭 3인칭의 敍述視點, 장면제시적인 도입부 및 소급서술, 놀라운 反轉의 結末(Surprising End)를 가진 플롯 等의 形式을 가진것인데, 한편으로는 飜譯 文體에 의하여 우리 文學의 傳統性 속에 흡수되기도 했지만 또 한 편으로는 우리 文學의 새로운 변화에 "영향"의 一面을 담당했다고 보여진다. 特히 오·헨리와 포우의 영향 가능성으로 要約되어지는데, 포우가 진지하고 비극적인 人間의 내면성을 다룬 "藝術"이라는 次元에 영향력을 행사한 데 비해 오·헨리는 새로운 短篇 技法에 많은 영향을 주었다고 파악된다. 그러한 영향의 一例를 보기 위해 오·헨리의 〈Witches 'Loaves〉(마녀의 광)과 주요섭의 〈아네모네의 마담〉을 비교해 보면, 主題 및 素材, 構成의 類似性과, 思想 및 情緖, 語調(tone)의 差異를 發見할 수 있다. 이것으로 미루어 보건대 오·헨리의 小說이 20年代 보다는 思想統制를 받던 30年代에, 內容보다는 주로 기교적인 側面에, 영향 주었으리라는 것을 推斷할 수 있다. 그 外에 基督敎 文學과 長篇 通俗小說들이 우리 文學의 發展史에 괄목할 만한 영향이나 肯定的인 영향을 끼쳤으리라고는 보이지 않는다. 따라서 本論文의 結論은 다음과 같다. 20年代에 飜譯된 美國小說들은 당시의 혼란한 우리 문단의 취향을 반영하고, 美國文學의 수용양태를잘 보여주는데, 이러한 검토를 통하여 美國 小說은, 우리 文學에 새로운 形式인 "近代벅 短篇小說"의 定立을 마련하는데 커다란 영향을 주었고, 그중에서도, 社會意識이나 民族意識을 띤 作品보다는 소위 "純粹藝術" "흥미"를 주는 類型의 것에, 思想的인 面보다는 "기교"라는 측면에 많은 영향을 주었다는 것을 알 수 있다.;Western influence as well a3 traditional background is the problem that has to be investigated in description of modern ages of History of Korean Literature. As the influence of American Literature has been disregarded particularly, the author wishes suggest another point of view, emphasizing on the traslated American novels, approaching from the point of Korean Literature Historic view. Despite U.S. was the first western country to open the door, the amount brought in was much less than the other western nations in literaturary aspects. And it was only from the 1920's that the American novel's noticeable influence could be found. Such were those of E.A. Poe, O'Henry, Jack London, Henry Vandyke. The genre of these novels, those dealt with serous but tragic story of life, happenings in the ordinary living, phase of christianic doctrine, literature pertaining to class strife and popular stories, were Short Stories. It is possible to deduce that the settlement of the styles of 1920's Korean Short Stories was influenced by these American novels that used the first and third person's point of view, scene suggestive introductory part, retroactive description, surprising ending. Especially, Poes sericusness in the content and O'Henry's craftmanship in the plot may have influenced on Korean Literature. When we compare 〈Anemone Madame〉 with 〈witches' Loaves〉, we are able to see not only similarity of theme, material and plot but also difference of thought, emotion and tone. With this comparison, it is easily educed that O'Henry's novels had much more effect on workmanship than contents of Korean literature, and 1930's Korean literature, than that of 1920's due to the repression of thoughts in 1930's. Besides, it seems that christianic literature and popular long piece of works did not have effect on the development of Korean literature. Therefore, the author's conclusions are as follows: We can see that the translated American novels in 1920's reflected the confused atmosphere of literary trends at that time, and these contributed to the settlement of 'Modern Short Story' which was new to Korean literary circle. It can be deduced that the translated American novels in 1920's have much more influence on the 'pure' and 'interest oriented' novels than those of 'social consciousness', 'National consciousness'.
