Globalization of the Arms Industry

Abstract

This thesis examines the trends of the global arms industry during the post-Cold War era. By surveying international business activities of the arms industry in the post-Cold War period, this thesis analyzes globalization of the arms industry and explores what factors of the defense industry cause this trend, globalization of the arms industry. The results suggest that four things; ⅰ) globalization is a new common strategy in the arms industry since the end of the Cold War; ⅱ) globalization of the defense industry has not developed at the same degree by regions; ⅲ) arms industry globalization is not a homogeneous process throughout arms producing sectors; ⅳ) economic factors - the curtailment of military expenditures, the decrease of arms exports and the U.S. domestic restructuring - in the post-Cold War era cause the new trend in the arms industry. This thesis, consequently, finds that the global defense industry has adopted a new trend, globalization, to adjust to the new economic environment in the post-Cold War era.;본 논문은 냉전 종식 이후 세계 무기 산업의 흐름이 어떻게 변화하고 있는가를 분석한다. 본 논문은 탈냉전 시대에 들어서 무기 산업의 국제적 경제 활동이 어떻게 이루어지고 있으며, 이를 발생시키는 원인은 무엇인지에 대해서 고찰한다. 이러한 분석을 통해 이 논문은 네 가지 가정을 지지한다. 첫째, 탈냉전 시대의 세계화는 무기 산업에 있어 새로이 등장한 공통된 전략이다. 둘째, 무기 산업의 세계화는 세계 지역에 따라 다른 수준으로 발전하고 있다. 셋째, 무기 산업의 세계화는 무기 생산 부분에 따라서 발전 수준이 다르다. 넷째, 탈냉전 시대의 군비 삭감, 무기 수출의 부진 및 미국 무기 산업의 구조조정이 무기 산업의 세계화를 초래한 원인이다. 따라서 이 논문은 탈냉전 시대의 새로운 경제 환경에 적응하기 위하여 세계 무기 산업이 세계화라는 새로운 흐름을 선택하였음을 논한다.
