Gustave Flaubert의 ≪Salammbo≫管見

Abstract

Flaubert wrote his work, Salammbo on the basis of the ancient city, Carthage. This city, Carthage, has little relationship with modern society. Flaubert showed us a magnificient and gorgeous scene from the past city describing the colors, making the men live once more, and providing sun and vigour. This work is not a simple historic novel, but a precise development resulting from observation, research and collection of facts as well as a rich imagination with a good mixture of poetic inspiration. Furthermore, this is an epic describing the dream of his boyhood, and the desire of being a great, mature author. So in this thesis, I try to see why Flaubert had to write Salammbo, why he chose Carthage, the relation with the past historical novel, the greatness of the epic and the image of the female throogh the heroine of this work, Salammbo. I wanted to observe this work from the point of view, different from the traditional method. Today, about one century after this work was published, Flaubert is highly evaluated as the author who has already used the method ofthe modern novel by fixing a mirage in reality, In other words he found a subject matter in the past and the method in the present. With a new method of expression he described the cruel battle as it was, which is so far from our daily lives. Therefore this work tells us that the human being only thinks of the assassination of others although the civilization declines, In other words it tells us the fatal destiny of human beings. Today Carthage, the dead civilization of the cold world, is revived by Salammbo and it symbolizes one of the possibilities of those which the will of human beings choose, which might be - the waiting of a good earth.;Flaubert 는 그의 저서 《Salammb?》 를 통하여 현대의 우리와는 그 교류가 완전히 단절되어 있으며 문화의 전반적인 흐름속에 무엇하나 남기지 않고 사라져 간 기괴한 도시의 전형인 Carthage라는 도시국가를 소재로 하여 거기에 색채를 부여하고 사람을 살게하며 그리고 태양과 생기를 주어 한 과거의 전부를 소생시킴으로서 우리에게 장엄하고도 화려한 광경을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 여기서 Flaubert는 단순히 역사를 재현하였던 종래의 역사소설과는 달리, 관찰과 자료수집과 사실의 정확한 배열뿐만이 아니라 그의 풍부한 상상력과 시정을 합쳐서 조화를 이루게 하였으며 또한 그의 소년시절의 꿈과 성장한 대가의 꿈을 시적으로 표현하여 서사시의 작품을 만들어낸 것이다. 따라서 이번 논문에서는 Flaubert가 《Salammb?》 를 쓰게 되었던 상황과 많은 고대 사실중 Carthage를 택하게 된 동기, 그리고 종래의 역사소설과의 관계와 이 작품의 서사시 적인 위대함 그리고 여주인공 Salammb?의 여성상 등을 고찰하여 종래의 각도와는 다른 각도에서 Flaubert 가 시도하였던 작품의 성격을 새로이 정립하여 본 것이다. 《Salammb?》가 출판된지 100년이 지난 오늘날에 이르러서는 Flaubert가 이 작품에서 환상을 현실에 뿌리박에 하는 현대소설의 수법을 이미 실천한 작가임이 높이 평가되고 있다. 즉 그는 소재는 고대에서 찾고 수법은 현대에서 찾은 새로운 묘사로서 아주 상궤를 벗어난 실생활과는 거리가 먼 전대미문의 잔인한 전투를 적나라하게 묘사하여 인간들이란 그 문명이 쇠퇴해 가더라도 그들이 생각하는 것은 타인에 대한 학살뿐이라는, 인간의 숙명에 대하여 말하고 있는 것이다. 그리하여 오늘에는 죽은 문명의 차디찬 세계, 불꽃과 피속에 사라진 Carthage는 《Salammb?》 에 의하여 인간의 의지가 선택하는 몇 개의 가능성 중에서, 이른바 대지를 기다리는 하나의 가능성의 상징으로 되고 있는 것이다.
