Abstract
Jane Austen thought the final goal of human life as marriage. She found a real meaning of life in the process of arriving at this goal. All her novels are comic dramas of reason in which happy ending copies about through a dramatic action in which one of the leading characters learns something important enough about reality and his own nature to experience a deep change of mind and heart. Till petting at happy marriage all heroines must undergo painful ordeal. All three heroines in the novels of Northanger Abbey, Pride and Preiudice, and Emma, painfully discover that they have been making mistakes both about themselves and about the world in which they live. All realize that the cause of the deception lay within: Catherine realizes that she has brought to the Abbey a mind craving to be frightened; Elizabeth, that she has courted ignorance and driven reason away; Emma, that she has practicing deceptions on herself. The result of all their conduct is self-hatred and self-contempt. Through such painful experiences they attain maturity and self-knowledge. The most agonizing trial in the process of attaining self-knowledge, is heroine's living with the thought of a loved man lost to her-it is through this experience, brief or prolonged, of all the heroines, which brings them into total knowledge of self. Northanger Abbey centres upon Catherine's growing from immature child to responsible adult, Catherine Morland, affected by sensational and sentimental horror novels, creates her own world of illusion and there she loses her reason and good sense. Her romantic fancies make her idolize isabella Thorpe as a paragon of beauty and sensibility, and condemn General Tilney as a murderer of his wife. Since she has not got eyes to judge people correctly, she cannot grasp the real character of them. By the help of Henry Tilney, who plays in the novel as her mentor and who explodes her Gothic suspicions, she is brought to the world of common sense, and she awakens from illusion. In reality she experiences total disillusionment about human relations which are formed in the world of romantic illusion, by the betrayal of Isabella Thorpe and the cruel dismissal of General Tilney. With this disillusionment based on moral principles and human relations, she is brought to maturity and to knowledge not only of life but also of herself. Thus Catheirne grows out from immaturity to an adult ability to discriminate between the valuable and the worthless in literature and in life. Elizabeth Bennet, not realizing the limitation of human ability, as a studier of character overestimates her own ability to read characters and motives of other people. This overestimation of self is based on her vanity, and it leads her to self-deception. Since she has observed people with self-centered way of thinking and prejudice, she is led to commit mistakes. Darcy's slight has hurt Elizabeth's pride and initiated prejudice she will nourish against him. Since she wants to be a judge with pride and prejudice, she cannot discern his real character and as a consequence accuses him very unjustly. By his letter of self-defense, she learns that her own ability to judge character and predict the actions and feelings of her acquaintances is far from perfect; and this is an important step on the way to self- knowledge. She now acknowledges that she has never known herself. By this attainment of self-knowledge, her self-overestimation breaks down and she is properly humbled. It is only when she discarded her weaknesses, namely her vanity, pride, prejudice, and overestimation of self, which are the obstacles on the way to self-knowledge, that she attains true self-knowledge and self-realization. Emma Woodhouse, seeing- the world egocentrically and rejecting even marriage, the ultimate goal in one's life, wants to reside as a god over Highbury peiple. Emma's excessive self-esteem prevents her to find the right place in society and to have harmonious human relations. One of her two major errors is her misconception of her own social role and the other springs from her reluctance to acknowledge her own imperfections. Planning Harriet's marriage she undergoes several shocks through which she discovers her inability to penetrate human mind and the limiation of her own human ability. Through these shocks her excessive self-esteem is hammered hit by bit into collaps, and at last she discovers that she is only an ordinary human being after all. This attainment of self-knowledge makes her realize that people whom she despised are morally superior to her. She now learns to acknowledge her own imperfections and thus she is humbled. Now that she attained self-knowledge, she finds her right place in society, the diminutival of Emma in the social scene, and her reduction to her proper place in the whole scale of value bring about the growth of Emma in the moral scheme. By the influence of Mr. Knightly, she pains sense and by marrying him she attains true self-knowledge, and as she learns to have harmonious and integrate human relations, she steps into the road of self-realization. In the process of growing up, all heroines have acquired wisdom and ability to see the reality and to have harmonious and integrate human relations by actual experiences. Through incidents which seem trivial to other people but which are very shocking to them, they have attained self-knowledge by which they have become humble. As a result they have grown out from immaturity to an adult responsibility, and finally have arrived at marriage which is the most important event in one's life. In the materialistic world, where commercial view of marriage is prevalent, heroines have overcome all the social pressures and as a consequence they are enabled to arrive at the marriage which is the fruition of love. Thus Jane Austen has achieved her dramas of learning very successfully by tracing minutely and credibly and dramatically the learning process of heroines.
