Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the methods of Thomas Mann to reach Humanism as a middle-way, through the ironies accuring from the desire for the process of synthesizing and artistiy, the problems of disease and death unveiled in Thomas Mann's 'Works. In fact, it is not exaggeration that few has made such dialectic attempts like him as to plunge into many correlations and to enhance himself from the dilema. His Works are notified with clear depictions and unique style, in other words, transparent spirit of prose. Thomas Mann's characteristic may be said the inner description of mankind, that is, development and formation of self-consciousness. His early performances, greatly influenced by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and Wagner, were the mood of decadent complication and agonies, which considered life and mind, citizens and artists as two conflicting poles. In Tonio Kroger coincidence of mind and life is aspired and in Der Tod in Venedig beauty is pursued as an ideal comprising life and mind. For Tomas Mann, the essence of human nature is all the floating sources among these correlations. And the task of human kind is to accept and enhance these correlations, and to unite them into perfect one. The fact that Thomas Mann was possessed by the problems of disease and death meaned that he couldn't get out of the inheritance of romanticism. Process from Buddenbrooks to Zauberberg may be said to be the course of cure, for in Zauberberg the problems of disease and death are united in a, new theory, transcending all the things, which were described desperately in Buddenbrooks. He thought German as a middle people, and to such people ironies as middle pathos were the most suitable moral and ethos. These ironies are appeared as mind's self-revolt to life, in Buddenbrooks, as a problem of citizens and artists, in Tonio Kroger, as mind's self-suggestive efforts to life, in Der Tod in Venedig, as a diversion to life after being touched with the death, in Zauberberg. When the First World War broke out, he became seriously conscious of tho problem of German's existence. At that time Thomas Mann, 39-year-o1d was occupied in the German Mind, that is, in German Culture, without regards to German Civilization. He considered the political ana social problems were not substantial. But by the swell of western democracy flowed into Germany, he felt his conservative and musical element oscillating and couldn't afford to find out his own refuge. Thomas Mann thought that the western democracy would deteriorate German romanticism and musical tendency into dull and monotonous tone. Citicizing the western democracy during the War, he learned that "An age become end". Though he sought the way of get out of the desperated age, but he was too conservative and mental aristocratic to accept democracy, gut after all he supported democracy, because he was eager for freedom of mind. His originality and individuality was derived from 19th conservatism. The goal of his humanism was a combination of past-inclined tendency and a future will. The latter was revolutionary, the former conservative. So his attempts to combine new things was conservative as well as revolutionary. In Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen he supported German Humanism rooted in European Humanism. Therefore he became aware that German Mind was unpolitical, while European Mind was some what political. His View of Life changed His experiences that " political factors cannot be excluded in all the mental activity". So he thought that even if he vas not a statesman, he should make clear his political attitude insomuch as he felt responsible for social problems. He tried to settle all the correlations between life and mind, culture and civilization, politics and religion, east and west, because he believed that the true Humanism can be discovered by excluding unpolitical characteristics of the German and harmonizing different way of Thought of German and Europe. After when that he made his active attitude for society and politics, Nazisti took power, he struggled to prove the nobility of human nature and support Humanism. Before the First World War he was a romantic conservative, after the war he became the enthusiastic believer in democracy. Thomas Mann reestablished the ideal of the human nature, which and purified it and presented it to world. He established the substance of his literature, that is, Humanism as a middle-way, process of arbitrating many correlations with the sincere will to live. Thomas Mann's Humanism means a love for all mankind, and it can be survived in the true love of mankind.
