Economic Crisis of Korea and Mexico

Abstract

논문의 취지는 한국과 멕시코간의 경제위기 비교에 있어 문제점를 제시하고자 함이다. 멕시코는 1994년 경제 위기를 맞이 하였고 lMF(International Monetary Fund)와 다른 국가들은 경제 부흥을 위해 금융지원을 하였으며, 그 후 멕시코 경제는 활성화되어, 성장을 이루어냈다. 1997년 한국도 유사한 경제 위기를 맞이하여 IMF와 다른 국가들 역시 한국 경제를 지원하였다. 학계, 국민 그리고 언론 매체들은 이 두 나라를 비교, 이들이 경제 회생에 있어 같은 길을 걷게 되리라 예상하였다. 한국이 멕시코 경제위기로부터 배울 점이 있다는 것은 명백하다. 그러나, 이 논문에서 우리는 심도 깊은 연구와 분석을 통해 한국 경제의 위기와 회복이 멕시코와는 상이함을 확인할 수 있다. 이 연구는 한국과 멕시코에서 쓰여진 도서들로부터 취합한 정보를 기초로 하였으며 한국의 경제 회복에 관한 문헌은 이 연구를 하는 시점에서 출판되지 않아 가능한 많은 정보를 얻기 위해 인터넷으로부터 정보를 취합하였다. 이 논문에서는 이들 국가 경제 위기의 원인들에 대해 세부적으로는 다루지는 않았으나, 각 국가의 일반적인 정보, 경제 성장과 재정적 배경을 제시해 보고자 한다. 이러한 분석은 경제 회생과정과 문제점들에 대한 해결책들이 단순히 비교될 수 없음을 보이기 위해서 필요하다. 멕시코에 취해진 lMF 처방이 나라마다 다른 환경과 발전정도 그리고 영향력을 고려함에 있어 한국에 그대로 적용하기는 힘든 것이다.;The puroose of this thesis is to question the comparison between Korea and Mexico's economic crisis. Mexico had an economic crisis in 1994. In efforts to keep Mexico's economy afloat, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and other governments provided monetary assistance. Since then, the Mexican economy has been prosperous and attaining economic growth. Similarly in 1997, Korea had an economic crisis. The IMF and other governments also helped to save Korea's economy. It is inevitable for scholars, citizens, media, and others to compare the two and assume that the two countries will have the same path of struggle and recovery. Korea can definitely learn from Mexico's economic crisis. However, through this thesis, one can see that an in-depth analysis needs to be made in order to see why Korea's struggle and recovery might not be similar to Mexico. This research is based on information gathered from the different books written on Korea and Mexico. The information on Korea's economic recovery was not published in books at the time of this research, therefore, I used the information available from the internet to gather as much current information as possible. In this thesis, I do not cover the detailed aspects of the different reasons for their economic crisis. However, I merely try to give general information about each country, their growth and financial background. These aspects need to be stated and analyzed in order to see that the recovery process and solutions to the problems can not easily be compared to one another. The IMF prescription for Mexico can not easily be used for Korea because of the different backgrounds, developments and different influences.
