Abstract
Man has coexisted with nature or natural phenomena whitch he has preferred above all·things as an object of pursueing beauty. Nature is the basis of all shape, an inexhaustible mine of wealth of form and color. It create movable rhythm according to the orderly principle and offer plenty of space. Nature is not only a visible, physical material but also a source of provision of certain realization of idea or feeling through observation. It also deeply connected with the pursuit of artistic beauty that, when artists explore the propound, infinite beauties of nature with artistic sprit not only with an attitude of trying to imitate simply, certain artistic beauty can be constituted. The cave known the unknown world can become the good subject of study. The cave have need of limestone, water of some acidity, long time and have life power because it repeat ceaseless formation course. Since the cave, not so much frequented and thus mysterious among natural things, rouses rapture and will to persue formative works through its images in the mind of the author of this study that motivated by those feelings, she chose the beauty of the cave as a theme of my study. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to pursue a unique world of formation through the images of cave attained from the process of shaping lively images of it. As a theoretical background, method to formalize the images of nature were investigated through reference to domestic and foreign literature, and the cave was looked out through various literature, exploration of the spot and video tapes. In the cave of various kinds, lime cave became the subject of study. Specially, a special feature is looked into about stalactite, stalagmite, bacon stalactite, curtain stalactite, cave coral, flowstone and travertine terrace. Also among the existing works, those concordant with the cave images were examined, and next actual making of works to express those images was done. In designing, the big outline of cave or the spatiality of cave. At this point, sense of direction was made by placing stalactites, stalagmites and stone pillars on certain position and vividness was yielded though repetitive streams of difference length ultimately to emphasize more strongly the miniature images of nature in cave, such as forest, jungle images. As for the working technique, coiling was employied since it is proper to express smooth curves. Parts of work are attachment of coiled plates and made of stones or pinecones to enliven the quality of texture. As a base clay, sanchongto was chosen for its relatively less possibility of cracking apart in burning and propriety to express smooth curves and quality of texture, upon which dressing clays partly were coated. As for the glaze, violet, yellow and green colors were sprayed to go well with the mysterious, originating images of cave. I burning, works were firstly burnt at 900℃ in a 1.5m^(3) gas kiln for eight hours, and secondly oxidizedly burnt at 1250℃ for ten hours. As a result, the author attained a conclusion as follows: To represent or recreate nature whitch possesses various subject matters of art, there should be osservations and sensations through them. And in expressing the images of cave whitch is a part of nature, it is important to grasp the principle of formation and meaning of growth and erosion as well as its external features. To express the spatiality of cave, simultaneous expression of proportion and rhythm through a junction and a connection of the parts is effective. But enlivening the quality of texture is also important and, when properly using everyday life things as a tool, there can come good effects. Finally, in actual work-making, expressian of color is important as much as that of shape. sometimes, glazing affects the result of work greatly. In representing the mysterious images of cave, simultaneous use of complement glazes is an effective way. The study enable me to understand the cave newly and recognize the fact that infinite subject matters are in the nature. I believe that it has enabled myself to acquire a different approach to direct this study into another level in the future.
