자연에서 언어를 발견하다

Abstract

내 작업 소재와 관련된 자연과의 특별한 만남은 어느 일상속의 새로운 경험으로부터였다. 여느 때처럼 어머니를 도와 콩깍지를 벗기는 일을 하러 간 집안 한 구석에서 만난 콩과 콩깍지는 전과는 다른 새로운 느낌으로 나에게 다가왔고, 나에게 말을 걸어오는 듯했다. 이러한 만남을 시작으로 나는 콩과 콩깍지에 대해 관심을 갖게 되었고, 나를 포함한 주변세계에 대한 생각과 감정을 나와 인연을 맺은 자연물인 콩과 콩깍지의 모습 속에서 발견하게 됨을 경험했다. 이러한 나의 경험은 자연과 함께 일상적인 삶을 살아가는 사람들 누구에게서나 일어날 수 있는 가능성을 열어주었다. 본 논문에서 나는 특정 자연물과 인연을 맺는다는 것의 의미에서부터 자연물을 통해 인간과 그 주변 이야기를 풀어내는 사고의 근간에 대해 서술하고 그것을 표현한 방법적 특성을 살펴본다. 그리고 자연물을 통해 표현하고자 하는 나의 생각과 감정에 대해 서술한다. 먼저 나와 특별한 인연을 맺은 자연물과의 관계를 마르틴 부버의 ‘인격적 만남’, ‘상호적 만남’이라는 말을 중심으로 살펴본다. 이렇게 나와 특별한 만남을 가진 자연물은 인간의 상상을 통해 인간의 정신과 연결고리를 형성한다. 이러한 연결고리의 표현은 예술이 되기도 하는데, 자연물과 인간의 정신을 상상을 통해 연결하는 예술이 가진 이러한 속성은 신화에서도 볼 수 있다. 그렇기에 신화를 만들어낸 고대인들의 사고와 나의 사고의 유사점을 살펴봄으로서 나의 작업의 근간이 되는 사고를 유추해본다. 자신의 주변세계인 ‘자연현상과 자연물’에 관심을 가지고 그것들을 인격적인 관계에서 바라보았다는 점과 자연과 인간의 관계를 비유적 사고와 상징을 통해 표현한 점, 그리고 그러한 표현을 하는데 있어서 상상력이 작용했다는 점이 나와 고대인의 사고의 유사점인데 이러한 사고의 특징은 나의 작품을 이해하는 데 있어서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 위와 같은 사고를 바탕으로 내가 작품을 통해 표현하고자 하는 중요한 것 중의 하나는 인간과 자연의 공통적인 본질인 ‘창조적 생명력’이다. 이러한 창조적 생명력은 ‘난(卵)형’이 가진 중요한 상징적 의미이다. 난형의 대표물인 알이 난생신화 속에서 상징하는 의미를 살펴보고, 이를 통해 인류 이래로 이어져온 난형에 대한 도식들을 찾아본다. 난형은 나의 작품에서 ‘콩’의 외형을 통해 볼 수 있는데, 콩은 나의 작품에서 창조적 생명력을 상징하는 대표 자연물이 된다. 또한 콩은 알과의 형태적 유사성을 시작으로 나의 작품 속에서 생명과 변용의 모태라는 상징적 의미를 담아내고 있다. 나의 다른 작품에서 나와 마주한 콩과 콩깍지는 인간의 다양한 모습을 은유적인 방법으로 표현하는데, 이는 콩과 콩깍지가 외형적, 내면적인 면에서 인간과 유사한 특성을 지니고 있기에 가능하다. 나의 작품에서 콩과 콩깍지는 생명력과 생명 순환의 창조성을 지닌 모성적 장소가 되고, 인간의 양심을 두들기는 내면의 기호언어가 되며, 자아정체성을 찾고자 하는 인간의 모습이 된다. 또한 여성이 지닌 특이성과 모성을 담은 모습이 되기도 한다. 나의 작품을 바라보는데 있어서 ‘상상력’은 중요한 수단이 된다. 콩과 콩깍지에서 연상, 유추되는 외형적 특징을 통한 시각적 상상 뿐만 아니라 바슐라르가 말하는 정신적 상상, 즉 대상의 물질성에 주목했을 때 서서히 떠오르는 상상은 내가 작업을 하는데 있어서 원동력이 된다. 뿐만 아니라 이러한 상상은 보는 이에게 나의 작품을 깊이 있게 이해시켜주며, 보는 이의 개별적 사고로까지 연결시켜 줌으로써 감상의 폭을 넓혀준다. 나는 일상에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 자연물을 소재로 택하여 작업하였다. 이는 우리의 소소한 삶의 반영인 동시에 많은 사람들이 자신들의 삶 속에서 쉽게 자연물과 인격적으로 만날 수 있다는 것을 보여주기 위함이다. 나는 나의 작품을 통해 일상의 생활 속에서 자연물에 관심을 가지고 자연물이 지닌 생명에 대한 소중함과 내재된 힘을 느끼기며 살아가길 원한다. 또한 자연물에서 자신과 자신이 속한 사회와의 유사점을 발견함으로서 일상의 삶에 내재된 소중한 의미를 발견하는데 도움이 되고자 한다.;The nature, majority of my artworks are related, was originally initiated from strange experience in everyday life. I was helping mon just like normal days to peel off bean shells which came to me with special feeling and I felt they talked to me. From that moment, I gained interests on beans and bean shells and found thought & feeling on them which are closed linked with me and surroundings. This gives wide possibilities that everybody who lives their own lives with nature could feel & experience same way as I've done. At the paper, I will start with meaning of getting relationship with certain creature. And I will state furthermore that first, fundamental of thoughts on making stories between human being and nature itself, second, characteristic of how to express and lastly thought & feeling that I want to express through nature. First of all, I will try to look at the relationship with nature in terms of ‘personal meeting', ‘mutual meeting' from Martin Buber. The nature which sets relationship with me forms linkage to human spirits, this linkage could be expressed in art. Such characteristic of Art will apply same to myth. I analogize thought to fundamental of artwork by looking at similarities between my thought and ancients' thought who have created myth. Below four points are similarities on thoughts between me and ancient. And these are important factors to understand my artwork. First, both were interested in 'natural phenomenon & creature' of surrounding. Second, both looked 'natural phenomenon & creature' in terms of 'I-Thou world'. Third, both used metaphorical & symbolic method to express relationship between human being and nature. Fourth, metaphorical & symbolic method came from imagination. Based on the thought mentioned above, 'Creative Vitality', common substance of both human being and nature, is one of the key values. 'Creative Vitality' is the key symbolic meaning which comes from 'ovalness'. I'll try to look into the meaning of 'Eggs', which is the symbol of oval creature, in the oviparous myth. By doing this, I'll go over symbolism of oval shape from the beginning of human being. Oval shape turns into beans in my artworks and beans became representative of natural creature which symbols creative vitality. The beans in my artwork starts from similarity with eggs and diverse its meaning to life & origin of changes in oviparous myth. Beans and bean shells in my different artworks, reflects various aspects of human being in metaphoric way. This could be possible since beans and bean shells has similar characteristics to human being internally and externally. Beans and bean shells becomes the motherhood place which keeps vitality and creation of life circulation at my artworks and becomes the symbol language of the inside which beats the conscience of the human being and becomes human being who seeks a self identity. Also beans and bean shells becomes the features which puts in a peculiarity and the motherhood which the woman keeps. 'Imagination' is an important mean to interpret my artworks. Imagination from beans and bean shells are consist of 'visual imagination' through association & analogy and 'spiritual imagination' from material's properties. These two kinds of imagination are real motivation to my artworks. Also these imaginations help audience to understand my artwork further and enrich emotions by connecting individual memories of audiences. I picked nature you can find everywhere in everyday life for my artworks. It is to show my artworks is a reflection of our trivial life as well as how easy we can face nature personally nearby us. I want people to get interested in nature from trivial life and feel the power and significance of life within the nature. Also I want to help people to find out something in common among themselves, society and nature itself so that they eventually find out meaning of life.
