생태 이상향의 환상적 공간 표현

Abstract

본인의 작업은 도시에서 볼 수 있는 보도블록 사이를 비집고 나온 잡초, 가로수 등 작지만 특별한 자연의 존재들로부터 시작했다. 문명이 발달하면서 우리는 자연과 같이 공존하지 않으면 더 이상 살아 갈 수 없음을 깨달았다. 우리의 편리함을 위해 만들어진 도시 속에서 우리는 이제 다시 “자연과 함께 해요”를 외치며 자연과 더불어 살길 원하지만 그럼에도 그것들에게서 따라오는 불편함을 용납하지 않는다. 자연이 어우러진 곳에서 살고 싶어 하지만 벌레는 없어야 하고 자연과 함께하자고 심은 가로수는 인간의 편의에 의해서 심어짐을 당했다가 베임을 당한다. 우리는 자연을 원하지만 함께 하고자 하지 않는다. 지금 우리는 우리가 만들어 놓은 테크노피아(Technopia)의 물질적 풍요 속에서도 실향민처럼 방황은 끝나지 않는다. 우리가 찾는 곳은 이상향이다. 이 이상향에 대해서 본인은 이 공간이 존재하길 원했고, 이러한 이상적 자연 공간의 존재에 대한 상상은 프랑스의 철학자 미셀 푸코(Michel Foucault, 1926-1984)가 언급한 헤테로토피아(heterotopia)로 연결될 수 있었다. 존재할 수 있는 공간의 헤테로토피아 속에서 자연과 만난다는 생각은 두서없이 작업의 시작으로 연결되었고 그것이 일괄된 태도로 의해 본인의 작품이 이루어졌다는 것을 의식하게 되었다. 본 논문은 인간의 입장에서 본 새로운 자연의 이상향인 Heter-ecotopia에 관계된 본인의 작업에서 공통적으로 찾아 설명 가능한 의식의 탐구를 하는 것부터 출발한다. 보편적으로 자연과 인간의 관계를 살펴보면 크게 두 가지로 설명할 수 있다. 하나는 인간을 포괄하는 모든 존재를 생성하고 성장하게 하며 지배하는 근원적 현실이다. 자연은 살아있는 모든 것의 근원이라고 할 수 있는 것이다. 다른 하나는 인간을 통해 규정되고, 인간을 통해 일정한 모습이 갖추어진다. 자연은 인간의 노동과 활동의 공간이다. 자연을 인간의 필요에 맞게 개조하는 것을 근대 철학자들은 자랑스레 “자연의 인간화”하 불렀다. 이러한 두 가지 개념의 이중성을 모티브로써 본인의 작업에 나타내려 하였다. 앞의 두 가지 개념을 바탕으로 자연을 다루는데 있어서 본인의 작품에 나타나는 자연의 의미 역시 두 가지의 상반된 개념으로 나타난다. 첫 번째는 주위의 자연이 본인이 일상에서 바라보다 시작된 상상적 존재로 변화하여 그것들이 지닌 이상적 자연이라는 의미를 포함해서 가상공간 속에서 인간의 기준에서 생명의 가치와는 별로 상관이 없는 자연의 시뮬라크르가 자라나게 만든다. 즉 인간의 욕망에 부합하는 자연을 그려내는 것이다. 둘째, 자연이 가지고 있는 자연적인, 우연적인 흔적들이 부유하게 하고자 한다. 이것은 실증적이거나 사회적인 자연의 실제를 상징적으로 그리고 추상적으로 표현했다고 할 수 있다. 우리는 하루하루 주변 세계와 친숙해져서 존재의 감각을 상실해 간다. 본인이 생각하는 예술의 기능 중 하나는 존재의 감각에 대한 지각을 불러일으키는 것이라고 생각한다. 이러한 의미에서 우리의 주위에서 일어나고 있는, 또한 보고 느낄 수 있는 자연에 관계된 본인의 작품을 본 논문을 통해 본 논문의 목적과 이론적 배경 그리고 표현적 방법을 제시하였다. 본 논문은 본인이 사고하여 보고 느낀 것을 모티브로 삼고 있으며, 많은 노력과 시행착오를 통해 얻게 된 결과물의 정리본이기도 하다. 본인은 본 논문이 앞으로 진행될 작업의 기반이자 동시에 또 다른 시발점으로서의 역할을 하게 될 것이라는 기대를 하고 있다.;My project focuses on trivial but very special nature such as weeds sprout up in walkways or street trees that are easily found in the urban space. Human beings are obligated to lead eco-friendly lives in civilized society. Although we call for eco-friendly lives in the urban space which was created for our convenience, we tend not to take the consequences. We say we want to live in a lush green forest with leafy plants but think that there should be no worms. We plant trees but think that they can be cut any time if that is what it takes for our convenience. We want nature but don't want to live together with it. We still wander just like nomads, although we live in material abundance thanks to technopia. What we are looking for is an ideal and perfect world. I hoped we had the ideal world, and my imagination about the ideal natural space is connected to French philosopher Michel Foucault's heteorotopia. My thought of reunion with nature in hetero space that may exist led me to begin my project without a specific and concrete plan. I came to know that my consistent pursuing of this world motivated me to complete my project. My thesis starts with exploring common explainable consciousness in my previous projects that are related to a new ideal and ecological space called Hetero-ecotopia from a human being's perspective. Generally speaking, the relationship between human beings and nature can be explained in two ways. First it can be described through the fundamental reality creating all existing things, helping them grow and dominating them. Nature is the origin of all living things. Second it can be described and formed by human beings. Nature is the space where human beings' labor and activities take place. Modern philosophers called modification of nature to meet the needs of human beings "humanization of nature.'' I tried to use duality of these two concepts through my project. In my project dealing with nature with the two different concepts, nature has two major implications. First, the surrounding natural setting changes into an imaginative object, includes the concept of ideal nature and helps create natural simulacre that has little to do with the value of life from a human being's perspective. Nature that satisfies human desire is described. Second, natural and accidental debris of nature become rich. I describe existential and social nature in an imaginative and abstract manner. Human beings come to lose their sense of existence as they become familiar with the natural setting. I think one of major roles of art is alert our consciousness about our existence. My thesis presents a goal, theoretical background and descriptive methods of my projects that are related to nature which is happening and can be seen and touched. What I think, see and realize become motives of my thesis, and therefore it is the reflection of my past trials and errors. I am looking forward to my project becoming the basis and starting point of my future projects.
