Abstract
ALbran Berg's Opera Wozzeck is the chief representative in music in a moveaent called Expressionism. The subject matter of Expressionism is man as exists in the modern world. Hence, Expressionistic art is characterized both by desperate intensity of feeling and revolutionary modes of utterance. Both characteristics are illustrated by Berg's opera that is based on existing stage play, This thesis deals with the musical materials and the structore dividing into several kinds of technique utilized in Wozzeck. Berg made use of the leitmotif consistently in Wozzeck. The leitmotif is the representation of characters, typical situations, and recurrent idea by musical motifs. In this sense the leitmotif is skillfully applied according to the dramatic situations of Wozzeck. In harmony, continuous dissonance that helps build up the tension was used. And it establishes tonal uncertainty: There fore Wozzeck is basicalLy atonal music. But there are some passrges of tonally organized music. These are frequently used to erpress certain moods. Some of Berg's musical material spring from folk-music: folk songs, military music and folk dance music. It is by no means to express differentiation brween art music and folk-mu-sic in so-calLed atonal harmony. But he succeeded in it by reporting musical elements that we oan easiLy recognize and practice even within the atonal harmonic system. In orchestration groups of instrunlents were indepenaently organized. Instruments not usually encountered in traditional ensembles were used often. It is an artistic device for the creation of a realistic sound-atmosphere. Then the movement of the dramatic action corrasnonds to the movement of the music. In his treatment of the voice parts Berg. Undoubtedly paid special attention to the question of intonation. And the use of intervals based on the inflections of the voice in ordinary idiomatic speech. It is one of the best means of conveying the sense of the words In the musicaL structure Berg planed the three acts along the outlines of the three-part form, A-B-A. The five scenes of Act I is five musical pieces, each characterizing one chief character of the play in his relations with the hero of the opera. Act It is musicalLy much more closeLy intcgrated, its five scenes being iseparably linked like the moverents of a symphony. Act III consists of five scenes which is achieved through the unifving function of a musciaL theme. Each seene of Wozzeek has its independnent musical form, and it is brsed on the traditional music. This study has shown that Alban Berg used all the musical materials creatively. As for the structure, he systematizes it so specifically that he made it a unified whole. This means that twentieth century opera shows much promise on the new development toward a better opera.
