Abstract
During the Yi dynasty, engagement of women in work outside the home was not allowed because the traditional feudalistic idea that men are superior to women( 男尊女婢 ) and that wives should be submissive to their husbands( 女必從夫 ). However, in following the Kap-O revolution( 甲午更張 ) women were permitted to engage openly in social affairs. Even though the opportunity for social engagement existed for women, there was a great gap between the social position of men and women. In 1930's, even the legal code discriminated against women because of suspicious about women's abilities. Even as late as the 1930's there was still a remaining stigma about the ability of women which manifested itself in laws which gave women only limited rights compared to men. Moreover, inspite of the fact that women were granted some legal rights, their own conception of purposeful activity in society was limited and shaped by the traditional moral code imposed upon them by society. Considering the above influences, it is truly remarkable that any women in the society was able to produce literary works. Inspite of this, Park Wha Sung, Kang Kyung Ae, and Paik Shin Ae were able to overcome the limitations of their milleau and produce works with a strong sociological bent which keenly penetrated the society of the 1930's and was on a par with other contemporary male writers who had for more opportunities to develop their talents. Good literature always reflects the face of society and captures life, and the works of these three women writers is no exception. It may be said that these women abandoned their feminine role, but in reality in capturing the spirit of their age, they become an submerged in their society. They wrote in their situation as spokesman of the weak and abused, so the main subjects of their works are the tenant farmer, the laborer, the beggar, the migrant, the farm laborer and the prostitute. These unfortunate members of society are set in stark. Contrast against the background of their times, and their contact with the background viridly accentuates the characters. the main themes and subjects of these three authors' works are set out below: 1. The tenantfarmer's suffering's due to natural clamity. 2. The misery of the family of a member of the Independence Army due to Japanese oppression. 3. The humiliation felt by farm laborers because of their low social position. 4. The sorrow of the migrant. 5. The heart-rending story of the extremely poor being driven to the edge of dispair. The main themes of these writers' works reflect the sufferings of their subjects and of their age. Even though they were women, they broke out the narrow stereotype that women are only concerned about love and the indulgent life, and are devoid of serious thoughts, and engaged in serious works with a distinct social consciousness. Such works had previously only been written by men, but these three auth□s captured the essence and the specific conditions of the age of colonial oppression. Because of Japanese Imperialism, the 30's was an era in which politics were dominated by colonial oppression and the economy was characterized by plunder and rampage. This situation led to the weakness of these author's works which show up in that their underlying social objective was so strongly stated through their characters that they are too starkly portrayed. But the works of Park Wha Sung, Kang Kyung Ae and Paik Shin Ae are open and bold rather than hidden behind the veil of fiction. For this reason critics have tended to evaluate these works as being less important than they really are. Considering the society and the age in which they wrote, before their time as it were, we cannot help but respect and highly value the works of these three women.;이조시대에는 전통적인 남존여비, 여필종부의 봉건사상으로 인하여 여성의 사회진출은 있을 수 없었다.
