Abstract
If education on arts is defined as an education oriented toward the cultivation of personality, education on musics can be defined as an education to cultivate personality through musics. Much improvement has recently been made of arts education, especially music education in our country. Compared with advanced countries, however, arts education in our country has many problems. It is, therefore, urgent to forge ideals of arts which keep pace with the mainstream of contemporary arts and to shape up new curricula on arts subjects. It is hard to say, however, that the cultivation of music teachers in our country does represent the true approach to the cultivation of the teachers. The education for prospective music teachers is largely centered on performance which is a far cry from the ideals of education while subjects relating to teaching career are offered only as a secondary consideration. In addition, the departments of music education in teachers' I colleges which are supposed to take charge of the education have short history, and the curricula are apparently being remodeled to be similar to one of college of music. In this light, it is a pressing task to show clearly what should be the contents of education for prospective teachers, how the teaching method should be, in what educational system they should be educated in the best way possible. Thus this research attempts to draw up ideal curricula by comparing existing music curricula in our country with those in foreign countries. This research also deals with musical talent required for teachers which is obtained through questionnaire. Hypothetic as it is, this study points up the followings: 1. Music courses for general music students (musicians) will be separated from those intended for the students of music education (music educators), and scheduled in accordance with their purposes. 2. In order to realize the purposes of music education at the secondary level, systematic and specialized curricula must be constructed as shown in those in foreign countries. 3. Facilities required for the cultivation of music teachers should be secured. 4. Teachers generally lack in a sense of mission as teachers. If these points are improved, we believe that music education curricula will be consisted of the various subjects, ard directed for the intensive and specialized instruction. In this way, the future of music education in our country will look brighter than now.
