Abstract
This paper attempts to propose three suggestions toward the attitude of seeing art and life. I tried to see life as play, painting as poem and object as humor to reveal that art is earnest play that cogitates life. Through the art works, one can step aside from every-day life to possess the attitude of seeing life with humor and imagination. As I started questioning about what true art is, I have realized that expressing and interacting through a convenient and familiar language is important. According to this finding, I chose play, my familiar communication method since childhood, as one of the ways of expressing life. Through play, I discovered the new path to understanding art and by performing art that is living life as play, I actively defined the relationship between life and art. 'Life as play' is the first suggestion showing the importance of the play attitude toward life. 'Life as play' intends to approach life with light but, at the same time, earnest play attitude by imagining as if one is getting out of the groove to play freely on one's own will. Art, like-wise, realizes its ideals and desires by imagining virtual experience. I observe, with a premise that art and play attitude are similar, how the contemporary artists of my interest understood and expressed play. From this and on, I adequately analyze my works that are already or will be affected by the contemporary artists of my interest. I experience the joy of crossing real and imagined life in the process of generating and interpreting work. Two major methods of expression I use are painting and installing object. I suggest to look at painting as pun where painting is read as poem, and to look at object as symbol-play where object is seen as humor. 'Painting as Poem' is my second suggestion. I find poetic metaphor from the image and interpret pun as searching word-play from the title, and explain poem actually resemble one of my paintings. Thereby confirming if my painting can be read as poem with enhanced poetic imagination. Rather than describing animals and landscapes in the painting, I would chose implication. Though I paint virtual scene, I would interpret my own story with limitless imagination. My third suggestion is to see 'Object as humor'. I transform ordinary object into humorous form and explain the process, of finding different meaning from the hidden symbol behind the transformed image, through symbol-play. Humoring by making tamed objects unfamiliar or making my own toy by symbolizing as a replacement of an object. I would explain the process in which these specific plays are turned into object, and material used in my work. Ultimate Art contains story and experience of the artist. Art itself becomes life and play simultaneously. Play is the tamed method of expressing one-self and the attitude that cogitates life. Works created by these play attitude can be transferred to a viewer as another method of play. I expect to talk about positive life in art, and expect to see various plays found in the expanded view of art.
