유희로서의 예술작업

Abstract

All human beings have questions about their existence and the environment that surrounds them, and consider what to do in their lives. These thoughts are the core essence of daily lives and also the power to go through their entire lives. My work starts from questioning what a man can do in front of his or her place in a society and ever lasting wonder about the existence. The mechanism of how the society works and individual attitudes toward society have been observed. The way of observation was naturally performed by my personal daily questions about life. From this observation, I found that the main streams of the way of living in the current society are 'work' and 'desire'. Most people today seem to endlessly work largely because to fulfill their desires. People work mainly for two reasons. First, it is for spiritual reason, that is a sense of achievement, stability or confidence. Second, it is for material reason, that is of course money. The fact that work comes with desire these days reflects people prefer material values. As a result, work becomes material values and these values are used to fulfill desire. This is daily repeating pattern of life of today. However, it is wonder that people are actually satisfied with their lives by this pattern. Human beings fulfill their desires, but cannot get rid of emptiness and are endlessly hungry for something. This has been repeated and is continuously repeating now. This repeating has established a huge construction and that is our current living society that emphasizes on money and material. After observing the structure of our society, I thought about the attitude of living that one can or should take and also how art can be involved in that attitude. What can be an exit in the contemporary life of people who endlessly fulfill their desire through work and money and still feel thirsty about that fulfillment. Why people think they have achieved secured life but at the same time continuously wonders to find something real? What art can do in this era. If something progresses without solving anything, the direction of the progress may set wrong. Human beings should find something real not the instinct. One should not follow the desire to have something with instinct, but try to follow the truth which is surrounded by natural environment. This environment is not current capitalized society but natural conditions before civilization. There are many ways to find one's true life and I try to find it through especially 'fun'. Fun usually means 'amusement from playing', however, here I would like to express the term in more broad sense, that is refer it as an attitude toward life. Human beings inevitably work in order to live in the present civilization. No one can deny or refuse this simple fact. One can escape from overemphasized desire and achieve true freedom when his or she puts fun first in his or her work and goal instead of materializing them. What I do, that is, art is also a kind of work and therefore I consume materials but this is just one method of the whole process. My purpose of doing art is to find true fun and keep on going on the road to freedom. There is another way to find one's true meaning of life and that is 'energy'. If one can say fun is about the attitude at the start point, energy is vigor from our inner side that comes from the attitude. Vigor may come from many reasons. One's desire can generate energy and a will or motive also can generate energy. The energy that I want to handle in my project comes from when human beings' spiritual field expands and becomes more flexible. This is not for material purposes but the source for every possibility in spiritual world and valuable more than material aspects. My work functions as metaphor of these thoughts. The main stream of the project is to reveal fun which is an abstract concept in the real space through visualizing medium and express energy by the process. This starts from interest in forms and continues with lines and space and finally functions as imaginative narration. The process should continue as an endless experiment rather than have a single conclusion.;인간은 누구나 자신과 자신이 속한 환경에 대하여 질문하고, 그 안에서 스스로 무엇을 할 수 있을까를 고민한다. 그것은 하루하루를 이어나가게 해주는 근거가 되기도 하고 나아가 삶 전체를 이끌어 나가게 하는 원동력을 제시해주기도 한다. 본인의 작업은 이러한 개인과 사회구조 사이에 한 인간이 취할 수 있는 태도는 무엇일까 하는 고민에서부터 시작되었다. 현시대를 살아가는 한 개인으로서 개개인이 모여서 이루어낸 구조는 어떤 방식으로 돌아가고 있으며 그 구조 안의 개인들은 어떠한 자세를 취하고 있는지 관찰해 보았다. 그 관찰의 방식은 본인의 생활 속에서 자연스럽게 품어지는 의문이나 의심에 의해 은연중에 진행되어졌다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그 결과 현대의 사회에서 주류의 방식으로 인식되어지는 것 중 ‘노동’과 ‘욕망’을 발견할 수 있었다. 현대인들은 끊임없이 노동을 하는데 그것은 그들의 욕망을 채우기 위함이 많은 부분을 차지한다고 관찰되었다. 노동하기 즉 일하기에 관해 일하는 사람이 취할 수 있는 태도는 두 가지가 있을 수 있다. 첫째는 그 일을 통해 얻어지는 정신적 가치를 찾는 것이다. 이 정신적 가치는 일의 종류에 따라 성취감, 자신감, 안정감 등 여러 가지가 있을 수 있다. 두 번째로 얻어지는 것은 물질적 가치이다. 이것은 거의 재화가 대부분을 차지한다. 여기서 노동이 욕망과 함께 주류로서 발견되어진다는 것은 사람들이 그들의 일을 통해 정신적 가치보다는 물질적 가치를 따르는 것을 더 선호한다는 것과 맥락이 이어진다고 볼 수 있다. 결국 노동은 물질로 환원되고 그 물질은 욕망을 채우는 데에 소비된다. 이것이 현대인들에게 주로 반복되는 생활 패턴이다. 그런데 이로써 인간은 스스로의 삶에 대해 만족을 하는지가 의문이다. 인간은 욕망을 채우고 나서도 무언가가 비어있다고 느끼고 끊임없이 허기져 있음을 느낀다. 그리고 또 다시 다른 욕망을 찾아 헤맨다. 이것은 계속 반복되었고 지금도 멈추지 않은 채 반복되고 있다. 이 반복은 거대한 구조를 만들었는데 그것이 자본과 물질을 중시하는 현 사회이다. 구조에 대한 관찰 결과가 도출 된 후, 본인은 이것에 대해 개인이 취할 수 있고 취해야할 태도에 대하여 생각해 보았다. 그리고 그 태도에 대해 예술로서는 어떤 것을 찾을 수 있을까 고민하였다. 노동과 자본을 통해 욕망을 채우고, 그 채움에 끊임없는 갈증을 느끼는 현대인들의 생활 속에서 출구가 될 수 있는 것은 무엇일까. 왜 사람들은 안정적인 삶을 이루었고 찾았다고 생각하나 다른 한편으로는 지속적으로 무엇인가를 찾아 정처 없이 떠도는 것과 같은 느낌을 갖게 되는 것일까. 또한 이와 같은 시대에 예술은 어떠한 역할을 할 수 있을 것인가. 진행은 되어 가는데 해결이 나지 않는다면 그것은 방향에 문제가 있는 것이다. 인간은 본능이 아니라 본연(本然)을 찾아야 한다. 본능적으로 소유하고 싶은 욕망에 따라가야 하는 것이 아니라 자신과 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 환경에 대한 본연을 따르려 해야 한다. 여기서 환경이란 욕망으로 일구어진 자본주의 사회가 아니라 그 이전 본래의 모습이었던 자연적인 상태를 말하는 것이다. 본연을 찾기 위한 방법에는 여러 가지가 있을 수 있는데 본인의 작업에 있어서는 특히 ‘유희’의 방법에서 그 방향성을 찾고자 하였다. 유희는 본래 ‘즐겁게 놀며 장난함. 또는 그런 행위’를 지칭하지만 여기서 유희를 좀 더 광의적 표현으로 인식할 수 있는데, 그것은 유희를 하나의 태도로서 생각하는 것이다. 인간이 문명화된 사회에 태어나서 살아가는 데에 노동은 필수적인 사항이다. 이것을 무조건 부정하고 거부할 수는 없다. 노동에 임하는 자세나 목적을 물질적인 것에 치우치게 하지 않고, 유희적인 태도로서 임할 때 인간은 과장된 욕망의 굴레에서 벗어나고 진정성을 띈 자유를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 본인이 하고 있는 예술이라는 행위도 일종의 노동이기 때문에 물질을 소비하면서 이루어지고 또 물질을 얻을 수 있는 방법이 되기도 하지만 그 과정은 하나의 전체적인 수단에 불과하다. 그것의 궁극적 목적은 본연의 유희성을 찾고 인간으로서 행할 수 있는 자유로움의 길을 계속해 나아가는 것이다. 본연을 향하기 위한 두 번째 방안으로는 ‘에너지’가 있다. 유희가 출발점의 태도에 관한 것이라면 에너지는 이러한 태도를 통해 내부적으로 발생하는 기운이라고 볼 수 있다. 본래 기운은 여러 가지 연유에 의해 생겨날 수 있다. 인간의 욕망으로부터도 에너지가 나올 수 있고, 어떠한 의지나 동기 유발에 의해서 에너지가 나오기도 한다. 본인의 작업에서 주로 다루고자 하는 에너지는 인간의 정신적 영역이 보다 유연하게 확장되었을 때 얻게 되는 에너지이다. 이것은 실질적인 목적을 위한 것은 아니지만 정신적 측면에서 여러 가능성의 근원이 되는 에너지이며, 인간에게 실질적 가치 이상의 중요성을 지니는 것이라고 생각된다. 본인의 작업은 이러한 생각들의 메타포(metaphor)로서 작용한다. 추상적 개념인 유희를 시각적인 매체를 통해 공간 속에 드러내고 그것의 울림으로서의 에너지를 표현하는 것이 작업의 주요 맥락이다. 이것은 초기에 형태에 대한 관심과 맞물려 시작되었고 선과 공간으로 이어진 뒤, 상상의 내러티브로서 작용함에 이르렀다. 이러한 진행은 하나의 해결점이 있다기 보다는 끊임없이 탐구하는 실험으로서 계속되어야 할 것이다.
