천연염료를 이용한 삶의 이미지 표현

Abstract

조형예술(造形藝術)은 예술이기 이전에 철학의 표현이며 삶의 구체적 형상이다. 화가가 화폭 앞에 서는 것은 그로써 삶을 이야기할 수 있고 삶을 고양(高揚)할 수 있다는 믿음 때문이다. 예술의 여러 장르 중에서도 조형예술은 눈에 보이는 삶을 제시한다는 점에서 더 인간의 실제 삶과 밀접한 연관 관계를 갖는다. ‘삶에서의 연관(聯關)과 교차(交叉)’, ‘유기적(有機的) 존재로서의 인간’을 함축하는 개념의 ‘삶’이라는 주제를 조형적으로 형상화하고자 함에 삶을 형상화하는 데 적합한 질료(質料)로 천연염료를 선택하였다. 또한, 천연염료의 회화(繪畵)적 활용을 통해 삶의 이미지를 구체적으로 형상화하려 하였다. ‘생(生)’, 즉 삶의 본질에 대한 형상성, 삶의 연관과 중첩으로 대표되는 역사성에 대해 이야기하고자 할 때 합성의 안료를 활용하는 것보다는 천연의 염료가 더 적합하다고 판단하는 이유는 다음과 같다. 천연의 염료는 초기 인류로부터 인간이 스스로 삶을 드러내고자 활용해 온, 인류 역사와 함께 이어져 내려온 것이며 지구의 자연환경이 급격히 변화하지 않는 한 미래에도 그대로 전하여질 공통의 것이며 자연에서 얻어지는 순수 가치의 재료이다. 또한, 인간을 둘러싼 자연환경에서 체감할 수 있는 천연의 빛깔은 그 원료가 자연물이므로 자연의 색채를 재현할 수 있다는 점에서 인간의 삶과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 천연염료의 회화적 활용 가능성과 이용 방법 외에도 주제의 형상화를 위해 그에 맞는 표현법을 활용한 조형적 표현을 중심으로 연구하였다. 작가의 구상과 의도에 들어맞는 표현기법의 응용과 변용을 시도하여 독자적인 시각으로 조형 표현의 가능성을 찾고자 한 것이다. 아울러 이러한 연구를 토대로 본인의 작품 제작 과정을 검토함으로써 창작 활동의 더 나은 방향을 가늠하고 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 주제에 관한 이론적 연구에서는 삶에서의 연관과 교차, 유기적 존재로서의 인간에 관한 주제 고찰의 이론적 근거를 딜타이(Wilhelm Dilthey)의 [삶의 해석]과 베르그송(Henri Bergson)의 [이마쥬]를 들어 삶의 본질에 대한 형상성, 삶의 연관과 중첩으로 대표되는 역사성에 대해 설명하였다. 또한, 천연염료에 관한 이론적 연구에서는 표현 재료로서의 천연염료에 관해 살펴보고, 천연염료의 회화적 활용에서 다양한 분야로의 활용 가능성과 회화적 색채 표현 질료로서의 활용에 대해 알아보았다. 형상화 방법론에서는 방법적 연구에서 본인 작품의 주제인 삶의 이미지에 관한 조형적 표현과 천연염료를 이용한 색채 표현을 연구하였다. 주제를 삶의 이미지 표현을 통해 조형적으로 형상화한 과정, 천연색을 작품의 색채 표현에 이용한 이유와 천연염료를 염재 및 재료에 따라 어떻게 사용하여야 하는지, 본인의 의도와 필요에 따라 어떠한 다른 방법으로 활용하였는지 기술하였다. 기법적 연구에서는 삶의 이미지에 관한 다양한 조형 표현을 위해 여러 표현 기법을 활용하여 ‘삶의 연관과 중첩’에 대해 효과적으로 표현할 수 있을지를 모색하였다. 이를 다양한 방식과 방법으로 작품의 표현에 적용, 표현기법을 활용하고 변용하여 의도한 조형 표현을 위한 여러 방향으로의 접근을 시도하였다. 이상의 연구를 토대로 하여, 작품분석에서는 작품의 의미와 구도 외에도 표현방법에서 작품의 표현에 이용한 천연염료와 표현기법이 작품 내에서 주제를 구현하는데 어떻게 현양(顯揚) 되고 있는지에 중점을 두어 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 천연염료를 이용한 색채의 표현과 다양한 표현기법의 변용으로 삶이란 주제의 이미지를 형상화하는 조형 표현의 가능성을 모색하고 작품에 적용함으로써, 독자성과 보편성을 아우를 수 있는 창작 활동의 더 나은 방향을 가늠하고 창의적인 작품세계를 구축하고자 한다.;Plastic art is expression of philosophy and concrete form of life, much more than one of the fields of art. An artist stands in front of his picture, because he believes that he can talk about and enhance life with it. Among other genres, plastic art is closely related to human life, in that it embodies visible life. Therefore, this study has the implication of embodying the theme of life. This study explores the possibility of expression of life image. Focusing on understanding and expressing the nature of life, the study aims to find and apply appropriate materials and methods of expression to embody human life for the purpose of applying plastic expression of life image to actual work. The study is intended to embody the theme of life as a concept implying ‘connection and intersection in life’ and ‘human being as an organic being’ in a figurative way. Using natural dyes considered appropriate to embody life, the study mainly pursues to find the method of expression best fit for the theme of life and intent of the artist and apply it to actual work, in an attempt to embodying and expressing life image concretely. When talking about ‘life’, or plasticity of the nature of life, and historic characteristic represented by connection and overlapping of life, it is considered more suitable to use natural dyes than synthesized ones. As a material of pure value that we can get from nature, natural dyes, which have been used by mankind to express their life since the primitive age, going hand in hand with human history, and remained in the future, being shared by all human beings, unless natural environment of the earth changes drastically. Also, come from nature, their natural colors we can experiences in natural environment can represent colors of nature, which makes them closely related human life. In this study, plastic expression based on proper method of expression was examined to embody the theme, other than applicability of natural dyes to painting and method of using. By applying various expression methods to actual work with the aim of expressing life image, the study makes an attempt to put into practice and modify the methods of expression fit to the plan and intent of the artist, in order to find the possibility of plastic expression from a unique perspective. In addition, the study furthermore explores better directions of creative activity, by reviewing the author’s creation process. To this end, in the theoretic analysis, the study explained the plasticity of the nature of life and historic characteristic represented by connection and overlapping of life, focusing on Interpretation of Life written by Wilhelm Dilthey and Image of Henri Bergson as a theoretic foundation for the theme of connection and intersection in life and human being as an organic being. Moreover, as for theoretic analysis on natural dyes, concept, characteristics, and general usage of natural dyes were discussed, and as far as the use of natural dyes for paintings was concerned, their applicability in various areas and use as a material for color expression in painting were examined. In the methodology of embodiment, plastic expression of life image as the theme of the author’s work and color expression using natural dyes were looked into. The study also inquired into how life image was embodied in a plastic way, why natural dyes were used for color expression of the work, how natural dyes were used depending on dyeing stuffs and materials, and how differently they were used depending on the author’s intent and need. In the analysis of the techniques of expression, the study explored how effectively ‘connection and overlapping of lie’ can be expressed using various expression methods, for the purpose of diversified plastic expressions on life image. For the embodiment of the theme, various methods and techniques were applied to the work, sometimes with modifications, to try various approaches to plastic expression. As mentioned above, in the analysis of the work, the study focused on how the natural dyes used for the work and expression methods were emphasized to realize the theme, other than the meaning and planning of the work. On the basis of the results of this study, it is intended to establish a creative realm of artistic work, by exploring better directions for creative activity embracing uniqueness and universality, through color expression using natural dyes and modification of diversified expression methods, by exploring the possibility of plastic expression embodying life image as the theme and applying it to actual work.
