Abstract
Tapestry weaving the technique of which is very simple and specific has developed in the European countries for a long time. But it was not long before the tapestry weaving was known to us, Koreans. In the circumstances it was required to study the basic principles of tapestry weaving in order to make creative works of art. Handmade tapestry the origin of which is not well known except that it was already used about the 15th century B.C. is generally used as a cover for the furniture and floors, as well as hangings. In the ancient times it was used practically to keep the living place warm. In the medieval ages it was flourished splendidly by virtue of the support of the feudal lords and kings. And it was used as a palatial ornament to decorate the interior part of the mansion or the palace. But during the Renaissance period the copy of the famous painters' works deteriorated its value. The mimcing of the famous painters' works continued until a weaver did the whole process of weaving from designing to weaving in the 20th century with the influence of Bounouse movement. To make good tapestries the importance of the tools should not be overlooked. Among the various tools a loom is the most important. And a weaver should decide the type of a loom according to his taste and the characteristics of his works. In my works an upright-loom is chiefly used. It was recently introduced into Korea and seldom used so for. Considering the circumstances I would like to make the exhibition of my works a momentum though which may be very weak to popularize the Upright-Loom and tapestry. In the text I also explaind the usage and characteristics of other tools for tapestry one by one. The weaves of works are plain weaves and consist of warp and weft. They are so fast interlocked that only weft through which the color and the sense of texture of tapestry is expressed is visible. The material for tapestries is as important as the tools. And dyed fiber wool is chiefly used in my works as material. It was so difficult to get raw wool that using ready made fiber wool was inevitable. Because of the lacking in the process of spinning wool I had to choose apprapriate wool threads and dye them the color which was needed for my works. So it was possible to express the intended sense of texture of my works. Though these works I would like to suggest should be works of artistic value beyond practical purpose and that is should be such things as may be appreciated like a picture on the wall. This is the main purpose of my works. Though they does not come up to my expectations it is my hope that they may give some help to live a hamonious life in one's home.
