英國팝아트와 美國팝아트의 比較硏究

Abstract

本 論文은 영국과 미국 두 나라에 있어서의 팝아트를 그 展開過程과 內容, 특히 主題를 중심으로 비교해 보려는데 意義가 있다. 이러한 연구를 위하여 文獻과 作品圖版을 기본 자료로 하였는데 文獻을 통해 먼저, 팝아트의 槪念과 起原 및 展開過程, 두 나라의 팝아트 작가들의 작품을 주제별로 나누어 그 차이점과 공통점을 비교하여 보았다. 팝아트는 제2차세계대전 후 산업이나 소비사회 등의 물질문명으로 형성된 環境을 收容한 예술로서, 이는 否定的이라기 보다는 積極的인 태도로 現實世界에 접근한 美術이라 할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 그 根源을 物質文明이라는 現代生活 자체속에 그리고 그 속에서 機械的으로 製造되고 있는 오브제와 환경을 주제로 삼고 있다는 점에서도 팝아트는 現代社會와 밀접한 관계의 예술이라 할 수 있다. 現代文明의 非個性的인 특징을 따른 팝아트는 그 성격이 非個性的이고 理智的이라는 점에서도 현대사회의 성격을 반영한다. 비개성적인 성격은 우리가 處해 있는 현실인 大量生産과 大量傳達이라고 하는 물질문명 사회에 대한 예민한 反應의 結果였으며 또한 그들이 이룩한 造形的인 革新의 성격에도 밀접히 관계된 것이었다. 그것은 종래의 예술사조의 개념으로는 說明될 수 없는 것으로 일관성 있는 樣式의 개념을 부인하는 미술의 한 현상이라 할 수 있다. 결국 팝아트는 양식의 복잡성, 範圍나 媒體의 확장, 주제의 親熟性, 오브제의 實在性, 그리고 技術과의 연관, 이러한 모든 것이 서로 혼합되어 있는 것이다. 팝아트는 영국에서 먼저 시작되었는데 런던의 팝아트는 1954년 J. McHale Lawrence Alloway가 주축이된 I.G에 의해 具體化되었다. I.G 회원들은 大衆文化나 기계문명 등에 관해 注目하고 相互討論을 해나가면서, 팝아트의 美學과 美術을 전개시켰는데 그들은 주제로써 주로 科學技術이나 기계에 관한 주제, 추상적인 주제, 인물 등을 다루었다. 反面에 미국에서의 팝아트는 抽象表現主義가 화면처리에 있어 매너리즘에 봉착하자 추상표현주의의 內的인 世界에서 벗어나 외적세계인 現實을 객관화하려는 시도에서부터 출발하였다. 그 객관화의 결과로서 이때까지 전통적인 미술에서 度外視되던 일상생활에서의 오브제나 현대문명의 産物인 매스미디어의 이미지 등을 작품의 주제로 삼기 시작했다. 이들 英國과 美國은 같은 英語圈의 文化에 속하는 데에도 불구하고 어떤 연관이나 영향없이 독자적으로 각기 그들 상황에 따라 위에서 든 바와 같은 그들 나름대로의 특징을 가지고 전개되었는데, 이러한 점을 단서로 이 두 팝아트를 비교할 수 있다. 이러한 비교의 결과, 영국에서는 주로 기술과 과학문명으로부터 발췌해낸 주관적인 관점을 종합해서 重複聯想的이고, 比喩的이고, 戱畵的이며, 焦点이 중복된 方法을 가지고 주제를 다루는 反面, 美國에서는 매스미디아를 통해 우리에게 거의 記號化된 사물들을 主題로, 竝列되기 보다는 孤立되어서 보여지는 非聯想的인 이미지를 가지고 正面的인 경향을 띠면서 표현한다는 것을 알 수 있다.;This thesis has the significance of trying to research the comparisions of the developments, the contents and mainly the subjects of the Pop Arts in the United States and the United Kingdom. For this research I used the literature and the plates of works as the basic materials. At first I described the conception, the origin and the development of the Pop Art and compared the commonesses and differences of the Pop Arts in the two countries by classifying their works in subjects. The Pop Art is the art approaching to the real world not negatively but positively as accepting the environments formed by the material civilization of the industry and consumption society etc. in the post world war Ⅱ. Moreover it can be the art that has the close relationships with the modern society in that it has its origin in the modern life of the material civilization in itself and has taken the subjects from the mechanically produced objects and environments in that. The Pop Art partaker the non-individual characters of the modern civilization reflects the characters of the modern society in that its character is non-individual and intellectual The non-individual character is the result from the sensitiv response to the material society of mass production and mass communication and the one closely related with the character of the plastic revolution that it has achieved. It is one phenomenon of the art repudiating the conception of the form as the one unexplainable by the conception of the traditional trend of the art. After all the Pop Art is mixed with all things like the complexity of forms, the enlargement of extents and media, the familiarity of subjects the actuality of objects, and the association with techniques etc. The Pop Art was originated in the United Kingdom. The Pop Art in London was materialized by I.G leaded by J. McHale-Lawence Alloway in 1954. The members of I.G developed the aesthetics and the fine arts of the Pop Art by paying attentions to the mass culture and the mechanic civilization and debating each other on that, so they handled the scientific techniques, the machinery, and the figures as the subject. On the contrary the Pop Art in the United States started with the attempt to objectify the reality of the outer-world deviating from the inner world of the abstract expressionism when this reached on the mannerism on treating the canvas. As the results of the objectfication it has come to take the objects of common life and the images of mass media in the modern civilization which has been disregasded in the traditional arts. These Pop Arts the United States and the United Kingdom have developed-independently with their own characters without having inflvences on and associations with each other neverthless they are in Anglo-Saxion culture alike. From these perspectives, we can compare the two arts. Finally I reached on the conclusion that in the United Kingdom, Pop Art handles the Subjects with the overlapped-associated, figurative, metaphorical, caricaturistic and overlapped focused methods by extracting from the techniques and the scientific civilization, on the other hand in the United States, it takess the subjects from the things nearly symbolized by us through the mass media, isolated and expresses with images rather and non-associative then paralled having the overall tendency.
