Abstract
In modern sculpture, the expression of movement is important and is studied in various ways. In the expression of movement which is actually moving, it is nessessary to study the various forms and methods. The aim of this thesis is to study the formal structures and conjunctional methods of mobile, comparing Alexander Calder with George Rickey, and to precribe the characteristics of movents which are expressed by two artists. At first, 36 works of two artists that concretely represent the characteristics of movement were selected. And comparing them with one another in the formal structures and conjunctional methods, and suggesting the forms which are altered by movement, I could get the characteristics as following: In comparison of the formal structures, Calder's mobile is composed of organic formal surface and wire in the hierarchical structure on the basis of the principle of balance, and Rickey's is composed of many independent elements sectioned by the geometrical forms like line and surface in the space. In comparison of the conjunctional methods, Calder conjoined the wire that attaches the. organic forms with Chain, and Rickey conjoined the geometrical joint part with bearing. As a result, Calder makes the linking and revolving movements possible by hierarchical structure with organic relation and joint of chain, and Rickey limits the movemental orbit by the repeated sectioned and vertical movements which are attained by the structure of independent elements and the elaborate control with bearing. Cadler's and Rickey's expressions of movement of mobile by the current of air are characterized by the uniqueness of their formal structures and conjunctional methods.
