;The present study is to examine neo-classicism based on Igor Stravinsky's (1882-1971) view of musical aesthetics including his views of music, creation, tradition and performance, and utilize the results in actual music interpretation. Stravinsky is a composer who emphasized the objectivity and order of music, and the base of his aesthetics is as follows. As to his view of music, he criticized romantic view of music and the aesthetics of feeling, and maintained the view of creation focused on music itself, pursing absolute music and stressing instrumental music. What is more, he tried to discover newness through tradition and, directing his attention to the order of tradition, made efforts to develop it. Valuing tradition and order in his view of performance as well, he regarded performance as an objective work that conveys composers' intentions to audience. Stravinsky's such a view of musical aesthetics is in collusion with the style and consciousness of neo-classicism. While a large number of musicians in the 20th century pursued newness through renouncing tradition, neo-classicism promoted musical progress through being grafted into tradition. As a musical trend emerging between 1920s and 1950s, neo-classicism refers to a style that admitted traditions before classicism including its tonal system. Stravinskyled neo-classicism based on his musical belief and quoted and reinterpreted tradition through many works, and on the other hand repeated technical evolution. In particular, the last work of his neo-classic period, < The Rake's Progress> is regarded as his labored work that materialized his unique style. The work, which structure and style that seems to return to the 18th century, is similar to operas of Wolfgang Amadeus Morzart's (1756-1791) and Lorenzo da Ponte (1749∼1839). However, the work is distinguished from his earlier neo-classic works in that it did not borrow its material or subject from the past but reinterpreted tradition and quoted traditional styles through Stravinsky's original abilities. This study analyzed the aria of Ann, the heroine throughout the whole of < The Rake's Progress>, and applied the results to actual performance. Ann is a character symbolizing love and forgiveness, appearing from Act 1, Scene 3 and leading the drama in monologue. The music widely employs classic techniques in tone, vocal melody, etc., and is remarkable in Stravinsky's original reinterpretation and its utilization. The music uses classic techniques such as imitation based on counterpoint, ostinato and the use of organ points, showing an original musical style through diverse variations in orchestration, rhythm, the development pattern of music, etc. Taking note of his view of musical aesthetics in understanding Stravinsky's neo-classicism as a model of 20th century music, the present study focused its discussion on analyzing and comprehending the nature of his music that pursued musical order and objectivity. That is, this study purposed to contribute to performers' experience in the reality of ultimate reproduction by understanding opera < the Rake's Progress, Stravinsky's last neo-classic work>, to the depth of 'interpretation.-
