Abstract
Environmental amphiphiles such as natural organic matter (NOM) and surfactants are known to enhance the apparent aqueous solubility of hydrophobic organic compounds HOCs in aqueous systems. HOCs that result from agricultural practices and industrial activities are a major environmental concern due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. The widespread occurrence of HOCs in soils and groundwater has led to intensive studies of the mobility and fate of these contaminants in subsurface environments and of their remediation potential. One of the most attractive methods for decontamination of HOCs in groundwater is the remediation by permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). PRBs are passive in situ treatment zone of reactive material that degrades or immobilizes contaminants as groundwater flows through it. Especially, zero valent iron (ZVI) as reactive materials has been shown to be highly effective in removing HOCs such as trichloroethylene (TCE) as well as metals such as chromium. In this study, the influence of environmental amphiphiles such as surfactants and NOM on the fate and transport of HOCs in subsurface environment and the influence of environmental amphiphiles on the removal of HOCs using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) are proposed. The specific objectives of this study are: (1) to investigate the combined effect of environmental amphiphiles and the effect of HOCs' molecular structures on enhancing the solubility of HOCs; (2) to investigate the effects of environmental amphiphiles and co-existing contaminants on the removal of HOCs by iron; and (3) to introduce the hybrid barrier concept using reactive barrier and immobilizing barrier for the enhanced reduction of HOCs in column systems. Batch tests were conducted to investigate and the combined effect of environmental amphiphiles and the effect of HOCs' molecular structures on enhancing the solubility of HOCs. The apparent solubility of an HOC in NOM and nonionic surfactant solution is almost the same as the sum of the HOC's solubility in NOM solution plus its solubility in nonionic surfactant solution. However, the apparent solubility of HOCs in NOM and anionic surfactant solution was lower than their solubility in NOM solution alone because the cations that are released from the dissociation of anionic surfactant may form ion pairs with acidic or phenolic groups associated with the NOM. The effect of their molecular structures on the sorption of HOCs to humic acid was also examined. The extent of solubility enhancement of p,p'-DDT by humic acid was lower than that of pyrene because of the molecular structures of the solutes, although p,p'-DDT was more hydrophobic than pyrene. Effects of environmental amphiphiles and co-existing compounds on removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons with iron were examined. For surfactants, tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and chromate reduction by iron depended on the ionic type of surfactants. In the presence of surfactants and NOM, the removal rate of PCE by iron was increased due to the enhanced hydrophobicity of iron surface. The removal rate of chromate with cationic surfactant was also increased because of the negatively charged chromate, while the removal rate of chromate with anionic surfactant and NOM by iron was decreased. Competitive sorption of TCE was observed with naphthalene as a co-existing compound, but TCE reduction rate slightly increased with naphthalene that is hardly subject to reduction. In the presence of other reducible compounds (e.g., carbon tetrachloride, nitrate, and chromate), the reduction rate of TCE in a binary-component system was decreased due to the competition of electrons. Combination of iron filings and HDTMA (hexadecyltrimethylammonium)-bentonite were simulated in columns to assess the performance of the hybrid barriers for remediation of TCE -contaminated groundwater. TCE reduction rate for the mixture of ZVI and HDTMA-bentonite was significantly higher than that for ZVI, suggesting the reduction of TCE was accelerated when HDTMA-bentonite was mixed with ZVI. For the test simulating two separate layers of iron and HDTMA-bentonite, TCE reduction rate was nearly similar to that for ZVI alone, but the sorption coefficient (K_(d) obtained from the test was significantly higher than that by ZVI only. TCE was immobilized in the first layer with HDTMA-bentonite due to sorption, and then dechlorinated in the second layer with iron filings due to reduction. TCE with chromate of reduction rate for ZVI only decreased 2 times than TCE without it while TCE with chromate of reduction rate for hybrid barriers was also similar to TCE alone. Hybrid barriers can effectively retard the transport of organic contaminants from landfill leachate or oil shock in subsurface environment and can be applied in subsurface environments contaminated with multi-pollutants.
