Abstract
;Ernest Cassier says that human beings have characteristics different from other animals and have created culture because they are able to freely use symbols and that 'humans think via symbols.' He also mentions 'Art is a symbolic language' and stresses that art visualizes artists' internal responses to external realities and the inner world of artists through a symbolized formative language. The significance of artistic works is what is transmitted and expressed by artists via such a language. The spirit of artists is reflected in their works through the process of symbolization depending on the systematization of emotion, i.e., the expressive modes of organizational structure. That is to say, successful works reflect the spirit and thoughts of artists. Susanne K. Langer said that artistic works are an enhanced metaphor and an illogical symbol that clearly expresses what cannot be presented in languages. Likewise, artistic works do not describe the intentions of artists using a literary or declarative diagram but present in a symbolic manner what cannot be expressed in languages, i.e., the emotion, disposition, and self-consciousness of human beings. Symbolistic artists from 19C to early 20C believed that art shall be revived to express the conditions and inner world of human beings and ran after a new language to visualize their emotion and senses. Out of the realistic artists' pressure for imitating nature as untouched as possible, symbolistic artists could express their aesthetic senses by means of color, line, and shape on a broader scale. Therefore, they were interested in various cultures including Egyptian, primitive, medieval, modern and racial art, and tried to find out natural emotions and immanent senses of human beings by seeking after sensual liberation depending upon rather intuition and feeling than reason. Gustav Klimt, one of symbolistic artists, continuously looked for figures of women, examined closely vague relations between man and woman, and pursued symbolistic expressive means to reflect such his belief. As the above mentioned, the author became interested in his way of conceiving and expressing his subjective themes into symbolistic shapes. Therefore, in the same with which Gustav Klimt expressed and interpreted his works with symbols in his own way, the author attempted to express the inner world of human beings with symbols into design as follows: First, the meaning of symbol in art, the symbolistic value shown in picture, and the symbolism that appeared in the 19th century were examined. Second, the symbolistic artists' expressions of their inside and subjectivity into picture using their own languages such as shape, line and color were examined, as well. Third, the author attempted to present a design as a means breaking the boundary among fashion, textile and art by considering the textiles as result of making the symbol devised by the author into design through analyzing Klimt's intentions and processes of producing works. Fourth, the author also attempted to make collection of varied companion designs as well as a main design so that the color, motive, stuff, and techniques of the two designs may be harmoniously utilized and contribute to the development of textile products.
