John Wood Duke의 연가곡「From the Sea」에 대한 연구

Abstract

380년 정도의 비교적 짧은 역사를 가진 미국은 정치적 안정과 경제적 부를 얻으며 모든 분야가 비약적으로 발전하였다. 음악 분야에서도 마찬가지로 특히 예술 가곡의 발전은 매우 놀라운 일이었다. 미국 예술 가곡은 1910년 경 미국侍의 부흥으로 새로운 시대를 맞게 되었고 유럽의 시에 비교해도 손색이 없는 미국시에 영감을 얻은 미국 작곡가들은 수준 높은 예술 가곡을 작곡할 수 있게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 20세기의 작곡가들 중, 시를 사랑하고 누구보다도 시와 음악의 관계에 집중했던 존 우드 듀크(John Wood Duke, 1899 ~ 1984)와 그의 연가곡 <바다로부터(From the Sea)>에 대해 살펴보았다. 듀크는 문학을 사랑하는 아버지와 성악가였던 어머니 사이에서 태어났으며 부모님으로부터 문학적 재능과 음악적 재능을 모두 물려받았다. 특유의 음악적 재능과 시를 깊이 이해하는 그의 문학적 재능으로 그는 20세기의 음악사에 남을 예술 가곡 작곡가가 될 수 있었다. 그는 특히 미국시에 대한 애정이 깊었고 거의 대부분의 예술 가곡을 미국侍로 작곡하였다. 그는 시를 음악으로 표현하기 위해 많은 노력을 했는데, <바다로부터(From the Sea)>에서는 시를 낭송할 때와 같은 리듬으로 선율을 작곡했고 중요한 단어와 강조되어야 하는 단어는 장음으로 처리하거나 도약을 시켰다. 또한 단어의 느낌을 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 갑작스러운 전조를 하기도 했다. 20세기는 무조성과 선법이 신낭만주의적 어법들과 공존하는 포스트모더니즘 시대였다. <바다로부터(From the sea)>에서도 확인할 수 있듯이 듀크의 작품들 역시 포스트모더니즘의 영향으로 12음열기법이 낭만적인 선율과 함께 쓰였다.;Although the history of the American is relatively as short as about 380 years, the nation has remarkably developed in every sector owing to political stability and economic wealth. Also in the area of music, the art songs have developed astonishingly. The American art songs opened a new era around 1910 due to nation's successful reconstruction, and thus, the American composers who were inspired by the American poems standing comparison with their European counterparts began to compose song cycle by quality art songs. The purpose of this study is to review John Wood Duke (1899∼1984) who loved poems, being interested much in the relationship between poems and music, and particularly his love song "From the Sea". Duke was born from a literature-loving father and a singer mother. Namely, he inherited both literary and musical talents from his parents. Owing to his unique inborn musical talent and his literary talent for poems, he became an art song composer who would be recorded honorably in the history of the 20th century music. Particularly, he loved the American poems, and composed most of his art songs with them. When he expressed a poetic inspiration with music, he endeavored to express the poems best. For "From the Sea", he composed its melodies with the rhythms similar to those for recitation of poems, while treating important or highlighted words as major or leap. In addition, in order to deliver the feeling of words effectively, he used sudden modulations. The 20th century witnessed a post-modern era where non-tonality and New-romantic dictions co-existed. As confirmed from "From the Sea", Duke was affected by post-modernism enough to freely use 12 tone-rows and romantic melodies, particularly for the works composed between 1930 and 1970.
