Abstract
Biotechnology continue to move out of the laboratory and into the public arena in the form of therapies, drugs, and food products. Biotechnology raises various issues with regard to ethics, the level of acceptable risk, and usefulness of the new products. Teachers should be aware that how students understand biotechnology and recognize it, because biotechnology will have an impact on their future lives as adults, in a number of areas The purpose of this study is to investigate the understanding level and perceptions of the middle school and high school students on the biotechnology. The subjects of this were 210 8 grade middle school students and 182 11 grade high school students in Kyung-gi area. The test tool for investigating students' understanding level and perceptions on biotechnology consists of 107 items. The results were analyzed by t-test, two-way ANOVA, frequency study in the statistical package spss 10.0. This major finding of this study are as follows. The score of the understanding level on the biotechnology of the middle school students was 57.85 and not high. There is meaningful difference between boys and girls(p< .05). The score of perceptions on the biotechnology of the middle school students was 62.93 and high. There is meaningful difference between boys and girls(p< .01). The score of the understanding level on the biotechnology of the high school students was 58.03 and not high. There is no meaningful difference between boys and girls(p> .05). But meaningful difference between the course of humanity and natural science(p< .01). The score of perceptions on the biotechnology of the high school students was 65.91 and high. There is no meaningful difference between boys and girls but meaningful difference between the course of humanities and natural science(p< .01). The score of the understanding level of the middle school and high school students on the biotechnology is no meaningful difference but meaningful difference between the middle school students and the course of natural science(p< .05). The score of perceptions of the middle school and high school students on the biotechnology is meaningful difference (p < .01). Most students thought manipulating genes are unacceptable for animal cells and human cells. But acceptable for microbes and plant cells. Particularly students were much more likely to accept manipulating genes of plant cells. Respondents, particularly more boys and girls were positive perceptions of manipulating genes and most students have not heard the manipulating genes of microbes(61.61%).
