dc.description.abstractThe purposes of the present study were to investigate the relationship between perceptual development and reading ability and the effects of perceptual decentration training on the development of reading ability and perceptual ability. The subjects of the study were 96 children from grade 2 to 4 who attend an elementary school in Seoul area. The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups according to the scores on a reading ability test which was specially designed and constructed for the present study. Level of intelligence was controlled in each group. The experiment, consisting of perceptual decentration learning(PDL), ran for 20 days. During the period of 20 days, PDL, reading test, a test for perceptual ability and an intelligence test were administered. The results are summarized as follows. 1) There was a positive relationship between perceptual improvement and reading ability. It was found that perceptual decentration learning significantly affects the development of reading ability. 2) The extent to which the perceptual decentration learning affects reading ability was found to differ depending upon the school grade and the previous level of reading ability. In general, the younger the age, the greater the extent, and the lower the previous level of reading ability, the greater the extent. The interaction effect of school grade and the previous reading ability was statistically significant for the reading improvement. 3) Perceptual ability of the children was found to have been improved significantly by the PDL. The extent of the improvement was also different with school grade; the improvement in the second grade was greater than that in the fourth grade.-
