Abstract
;Paul hindenmith (1895∼1963) is a representative composer of Germanorgan music of the twentieth century, an important trend of neo-classicism. He wrote five pieces for the organ that illustrates his neo-classical characteristics: moderm music style based on traditional ones. Through these works, he is judged to be a contributing figure for the developmont of modem organ music. In this thesis, in order to better understand Hindemiht's works and his contribution, research has been carried out on his Organ Sonata No.1,2 and 3. The 1^(st) movement of his first organ sonata takes the sonata-allegro form with introduction. The 2^(nd) movenment comes in two-part form. The 3^(rd) movement is in rondo form where the detail and structure conform to the classical sonata form. Moreover, Hindemith also keeps a framework of linear counterpoint in Baroque music and in fact, he applies a wide rage of musical techniques to his work, such as ostinato, pedal poing by counterpoint. Hindemith's second organ sonata was composed in the same year as his first sonata. The new framework of movements is represented by rondo form for the 1^(st) and 3^(rd) movement and the three-part form for the 2^(nd) movement. In this sonata, a succession of baroque form, in particular "fugre" becomes prominent in the last movement, However, this movement is differentiated from the general concept of fugue showing that Hindemith did not follow tradition but rather he illustrated his indivedual traits and change of form. Other individual traits are illustrated by his use of seconds, fourths, parallel intervals, the frequent imitation of melody and phrase, and the pedal point. Hindemith's third sonata composed in 1940 is comprised of three movements: the 1^(st) movement shows very contrasting two-part from: the 2^(nd) movement is two-part form: and the 3^(rd) movement is three-part form. The most distinctive point is that Germam folk songs are expanded through cantus firmus representing hindemith's interest in folk songs. Each movement uses the melodies of different folk songs and each melody act as deciding the center of each movement or part, Moreover, the melodies induces, at the same time, melodic and hamonic expansion. His works are well reflected in main theory of「Unterweisung im Tonsatz」 written by him in 1937 which characterizes purified progress, short melodic line(especially fourths), tonality motivated by tonal center as well as harmony based on his own theoretic principles. As mentioned above, in his organ sonatas, Hindemith introduces his distinctive tonality and harmony to traditional musical elements illustrating his specialty of linking his modernness with tradition. Moreover, as far as the organ's tone is concerned, rather than just a spectacular combination he relies on a solidly organized structure itself and rhythmic formation. In this aspect he is able to show another elemont making all three of his organ sonatas that more meaningful.
