상류층의 결혼에 관한 조사 연구

Abstract

현대 한국 사회는 산업사회로의 급격한 이행에 따라 문화 및 생활 전반에 걸쳐 다양한 변화를 경험하고 있다. 그중에서도 가족은 가장 큰 변화를 겪고 있는 하나이며 결혼은 이러한 변화를 보여주는 여러 가지 의미를 함축하고 있다. 특히 핵가족 내에는 극단적인 개인주의 성향과 동시에 여전히 가부장적인 전통적 가치관이 기저에 흐르고 있다. 또한 상류층은 기타 제반 행동 양식 전반을 주도하며 상류 지향적인 문화를 추구하는 한국 사회를 이끄는 하나의 패턴을 형성하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 상류층 결혼의 실제를 살펴보고 그러한 과정 속에 나타난 전통 사회 가족의 의미 더 나아가 친족의 의미가 어떻게 계승 혹은 변질되어 나타나는지, 재화의 이동과 교환 관행이 상류층 내 어떤 방식으로 적용되는지 밝히고자 한다. 연구방법은 상류층을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 통해 배우자 선택 과정과 재화의 이동과 교환 과정의 의미와 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 또한 이를 보완하고 구체적 사례 제시를 위해 심층면접을 실시하였다. 본 논문의 구체적인 연구문제는 다음과 같이 설정되었다. 첫째, 상류층의 결혼을 통해 그들 내 친족의 범위와 그 유형을 규정짓는다. 둘째, 상류층 결혼 시 이루어지는 물질 이동을 통해 자본주의 사회의 계층 구조 속에서 그들이 어떻게 자신들의 계층을 재생산하며 고착화시켜 나가는지 살펴보고자 한다. 연구문제와 관련되어 나타난 결과를 보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 상류층 결혼 과정에서 나타난 특징은 보수적인 경향이다. 특히 외형상 핵가족이라는 형태를 나타내면서 여전히 가부장적인 전통적 가치관이 지배적이었다. 또한 타 계층과 구분 지으려는 일종의 폐쇄성을 보였다. 이러한 경향 하에 나타난 것이 동류혼의 형태이다. 둘째, 재화의 이동과 교환 과정에서 나타난 부(富) 세습이다. 경제적 조건이 결혼 과정 전반을 지배하는 양상을 띠면서 상류층의 호화 혼수는 자녀들의 재산 축적 기반이 된다. 이러한 재산의 대물림이 상류층의 계층 내 안정성을 공고히 하는 주요 수단이며 이것이 구체화된 것이 결혼이다. 본 연구는 결혼을 통해 한국 사회 특히 상류층이라는 한정되고 선택되어진 범위 속에서 전통사회의 가치관이 어떻게 변화되어 가는지 자본주의 사회에서 경제적 수단이 생활양식에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는지 그 흐름을 짚고자 하였다. 그러나 이번 결과가 상류층의 한 단면을 보여주고는 있으나 일반화시키는데 있어서 다분히 제한적일 수 밖에 없음을 밝히고자 한다. ;The contemporary Korean society is experiencing various changes in culture and all aspects of life due to rapid industrial transformation. Among these changes, the family is one of the most affected and the state of marriage demonstrates many of the modifications. These are apparent especially within a nuclear family as they are founded on dichotomy of extreme individualism concurrently with traditional patriarchal system. Furthermore the upper-class dominates the changes in the style of living and is forming a pattern of leading the Korean society in its enterprise for cultural advance. Therefore this study aims to examine the practice of marriage in the upper-class to elucidate the significance of traditional family values, specifically whether or not the importance of relations have changes and the process of inheritance within the upper-class. The data were collected using a questionnaire directed at the upper-class on selection of spouse and the process of inheritance. In addition, in-depth interviews were performed to supplement these findings and for specific examples. The specific questions addressed in this study are as follows. Firstly, establish the boundaries and the format of the relations of upper-class though marriage. Secondly, examine how the upper-class renew their economic status and cement their wealth through transfer of assets at the time of marriage. The findings are as follows. Firstly, the upper-class marriages are distinctively conservative. In particular, despite the facade of a nuclear family the traditional patriarchal values were overwhelming. A form of self-imposed isolation was also apparent from their desire to categorize themselves from other classes. The pattern marriage within the same class is a result of such trend. Secondly, the convention of wealth is determined from the inheritance and the transfer of assets. Financial stability is an aspect that governs the whole process of a marriage and the opulent and lavish dowry becomes the foundation for accumulation of their own wealth. This kind of inheritance is an important factor in the maintaining the status quo within the upper-class and the marriage is a specific example. This study aimed to examine through marriage -within a defined subgroup of Koreans, specifically the upper-class-the changes of the traditional values and how the financial status can influence the lifestyle in the capitalistic society. However, while the findings do illuminate one facet of the upper-class, it is inevitably limited in generalizing the upper-class.
