When I'm in the middle of downtown within this stuffy and complicated atmosphere, through the warm sunlight and soft grazing of air I begin to feel at ease. I also begin to marvel at the endless amounts of creation made from the wind and shadows from light and air. I've often selected the light and air -the field I've come to become emotionally influenced in- as the subject in my piece of art, and especially took interest in the immaterial characteristic of light and air. In expressing these characteristics, I tried to express the endless world of immateriality beyond nature. Of the four elements of fire, air, water and earth, the light, which is not really fire but derived from it and air are different than water and earth which possess actual form and mass, i.e. they are relatively immaterial elements. As you know, the air and light are absolute ingredients humans cannot live without, but we humans go on living without any awareness or recognition of these elements. We humans maintain our lives by breathing air, and create the microcosm from the macrocosm of the outside world. We also exist through light and at the same time, meet the world exposed to us through light. Beyond the dimension of survival, if we didn't have light, humans would have to rely on the other senses without being able to see anything. Namely, light can be considered the start of life and at the same time, is the primitive starting creation in the field of fine art. I presented this absolute and emotional source, the light and air on canvas and expressed this light and air existing in absolute space through an open canvas to carry out the extension of the work of art into time and space to express free and infinite space. The theoretical aspect of this thesis is looking more closely at the fundamental properties of light and air along with the psychological and philosophical meanings, and then looking into the immaterial properties of air and light more closely. I also investigated the expression of air and light in the drawing before 20th century and the drawing since 20th century fine art, which utilized the actual light and air along the flow of the history of art. From methodical aspects, I investigated the fluid and soft expression of air and light along with the agreement of geological figures which symbolizes the materialistic world. Next, I described the expression of light and air by the use of India ink and lastly, I inspected the canvas through open space to admit the actual light and air. To express the fluid flow of light and air, I mainly used shading by using India ink for bland expression methods and also used the method of using dark ink, then washing it away with glue until the area has whitened. Also to accommodate the actual existing light and air in to a work of art, I used the method of punching a hole in the canvas. This was to let the air and light flow freely inside my work piece and this was to express the concept that my work piece and real space mutually permeate each other and in realty is not a separate concept. Through this thesis, I tried to deeply seek the direction of art through the analyzing, organizing my work pieces and by theoretically, methodically reasearching the expression of light and air.
