Abstract
;'The discovery and establishment of the self identity' would be the closely related idea of this thesis. The pleasure which derives from establishing the self identity and searching for one's location does not just come from observing the emotion, but becomes more obvious through discovering the law within surroundings and the location of the self within such system. My body of work is the visual expression of the study of myself confronting the transcendental space, space of the origin. Through this process of work, I have tried to gain an objective view of myself within the world I exist. When scrutinizing the history and each time of era, people have always had their own utopia. In my case, the heaven has been the beginning world of me and simultaneously the essential being of my yearnings and wishes, the place I would want to recurrent. It is a space which transcends nature. Heaven is the perfect and absolute being, far from the imperfect reality which evokes nostalgia of the transcendant world. The heaven which I, as an imperfect being, confront also becomes my imaginary space. Gaston Bachelard once said that imagination has the function of releasing the original image of enlightenment into transformation. Imagination takes the enlightenment into an infinite space where it becomes more lively and transformed into an existential being. Growing up near by the seashore(east sea of Korea), I have experienced the sense of freedom during my childhood. However, after leaving my hometown as an adult, I have yearned for a similar space of comfort which later on was transformed to 'heaven'. The ocean has become the mother of imagination coming from my childhood, and through the space of 'heaven' I have become to perceive and extend the meaning of self homogeneity. All arts cannot help revealing the creator who has fundamentally made art. The idea of 'the self' has become my crucial subject, for I have been constantly interested in the transcendental space where the self homogeneity becomes real, and that I focus on visualizing the location of myself changing on the level of completeness and eternity. By taking reference of artists such as Agnes Martin who maximized the expression of the soul through abstract art, Cy Twombly's line drawings of expanded thoughts, Mark Rothko's extension of the 2 dimensional plane through the feeling of light, vibration, resonance expressed in the style of non-materialistic color, the metaphysical character revealed in Yves Klein's blue monochrome, and Malevich who were constantly interested in the invisible world through imagination of overcoming the reality, I would like to scrutinize my flow of thinking within the process of my work. My first stage is the extension of the 2 dimensional plane through line and color. The rectangular screen becomes abstract reality standing for the infinite sky, and stage for emotion expressing actions. Through the overlapped coloration, the screen changing brighter from the dark tones reflect the artist's state of mind, and the geometric forms such as lines, circular forms, square shapes become visual signs designating the internal image. The cubes on the screen are the objective expression of the imperfect self which strive for the reviving memories of childhood, the courage of remembrance, and the world of purity. This reality evokes nostalgia of the past childhood, and possesses a self relishing character coming from inclination toward the transcendental being and exploration of the self. This is a process of newly recognizing the location of the self continuously changing within the transcendental and complete space, as well as confirming the true feeling of life along with self homogeneity. Art related with mental transcendence naturally accompanies solitude. However in this sense, solitude is not isolation discriminating the artist with others but deeply approaches other's internal mind. Only a person who is able to maintain self unity within solitude, may be able to meet the individual others. The transcendental world, that is to say the rendezvous between the heaven and the imperfect self, is enhanced through the meaning of "being" where the concept of communication is amplified. That purifies the self into the state of clarity from opacity, brightness from darkness, and becomes an intimate, fundamental space of the self freed from despair and anxiety. From the vertical, horizontal lines, colors expanding the dimensionality through exalted emotion to the geometric forms and white color, the thought that art of spirituality may lead the self to a true being is implicit.
