CHARLES SIMONDS 작품의 조형적 특성

Abstract

미국의 대지미술가 중 한사람인 Charles Simonds는 인간의 起源과 자연의 循環 을 주제로 한 조형을 추구해오고 있다. 1960년대 이후에 생겨난 미술양식 중 대지미술에 탐닉했던 작가들은 자연공간 자체나 그 안에 존재하는 자연물과 결부된 작가의 계획과 실천이 작품의 일부가 되거나 작품 자체가 되는 일련의 작업을 시도하였다. 동시대의 미술상황 속에서 Charles Simonds만이 갖는 조형의 고유한 특성을 검토하는 일은 그의 작품을 이해하는 데 있어서 충분한 의의가 있는 작업이다. 본 연구의 목적은 Charles Simonds의 작품을 분석하여 그 조형적 특성을 규명하는 데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 Charles Simonds 작품에 표현된 특성을 규명하기 위하여 1960년대 미국의 시대적 상황, 대지미술의 전개와 그 특성, 그리고 Charles Simonds의 예술세계를 이론적 배경으로 고찰하고, 그의 작품을 樣式別·主題別로 구분하였다. 양식별로는 해프닝 작품들, 설치작업들, 계획안으로 분석하였고 주제별로는 건축-조경, 인체의 性的 이미지, 풍경 이미지의 표현으로 분석하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 문헌, 카탈로그, 미술잡지 등의 선행 연구자료들과 작품을 기본도구로 하였다. 작품 표집은 1960년대~1980년대의 시대상황을 기반으로 했던 미술양식들의 작품 23점과 原始 遺跡 4점을 유의표출하였고, Charles Simonds 작품의 조형적 특성을 규명하기 위하여 1970년 이후 1985년까지의 작품 중 그 특성이 뚜렷한 총 48점의 작품을 대상으로 목적표출하였다. 자료처리는 제작과정, 형태에 입각하여 양식별로 표출된 작품을 구분하였고, 주제 별로는 형태, 재료, 구성방법에 따라 분석하였다. Charles Simonds 작품의 조형적 특성을 규명하기 위하여 작품을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, Charles Simonds 작품 전반에 나타난 조형의지는 현대 문명 속에 原始의 흔적을 접목시켜, 인류 역사를 이어오는 生命性을 표현하려는 노력이었다. 그는 이러한 목적에 부합되는 표현방법으로 해프닝, 설치작업, 계획안 등의 다양한 양식을 채택했다. 둘째, Charles Simonds 작품은 원시적인 특성을 개념적으로 도입하여 조형화하고 있는데, 假想의 小人族 神話를 만들어 이를 작품에 도입하는 독특한 방법론을 전개시키고 있는 것이 두드러진 특징이다. 형태상으로 圓形線形. 螺旋形의 시각적 메타포를 도입하고 있다는 점과 자연물인 흙을 主 재료로 사용하고 있다는 점에서 그의 작품이 원시성에 기초하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 해프닝과 설치작업, 계획안 등 室外에서 전개되었던 작품들은 기계문명의 발달로 인해 초래된 인간성 상실을 지적하고 자각을 촉구하는 사회적 메세지를 담고 있다. 넷째, 건축-조경 이미지, 인체의 성적 이미지, 풍경 이미지를 주제로 한 室內작품에서는 각각의 변화, 발전과정을통해 生成, 成長, 消滅의 '生命現象'을 묘사함으로써 강한 생명력을 표현하고 있다. 종합적으로 고찰해 보건대, Charles Simonds의 작품은 형태와 재료면에서 原始性을, 주제면에서 生命性을, 표출된 양식면에서 社會性이라는 조형적 특성을 가지고 있다.;Charles Simonds, one of the American earth artists, has pursued the formative arts which were dealt with the origin of the human and the circulation of the nature as the motif. Among the various art styles after the '60's, the earth artists have done many attempts to express that the nature space and the nature itself contacted with artists' plans and practices became a part or whole part of their works. It is meaningful to examine the special features of Charles Simonds' formative arts for the understanding of his works among the contemporary arts situation. The purpose of this study intends to examine his formative characteristics through conducting the analysis of Charles Simonds' works. As for the contents of this study, in order to examine expressive characteristics of Charles Simonds' works in the '60's situation, development and peculiarity of earth art and theoretical background of Charles Simonds' world were considered. Happenings, installations and planning were clssified by the style and the sexual image of landscape, architecture and human body were analyzed by material. The survey method of this study was instrumentalized by its relevent bibliographies, catalogues, the precedent research and works of fine art magazine, etc. As for the sampling of his works, 22 works which have the period background of the '60's and the '70's were selected and 6 remains of primitive age were randomly sampled. In order to examine the formative peculiarities of Charles Simonds' works an analysis was performed on sampling the total 48 items that were properly expressed in its peculiarity as the subjective samples among his items of works from 1970 to 1985. As for the treatment of the data, in order to examine the formative peculiarities of Charles Simonds' works classified works of styles were analyzed by production method, experience and shape while classified works of materials were analyzed by the view piont of style, stuff and constitutional method. The finding of analyzing the works by Charles Simonds are given as follows: First, Charles Simonds' works introduced primitive characteristics conceptually. They were developed special through method that he made an artificial myth of a tribe of pigmies of himself and he blowed up the method to his works. He usually shaped an arrayed spiral circle as the primitive visual metaphor and used inartificial soil as a material. So we can find that his works were based on the primitive. Second, outdoor works like happenings, installations and plannings have the social message that we need to recognize the loss of humanity owing to the development of mechanical civilization. Third, interior items were handled with sexual image of landscape, and architectual and human body was expressed as strong power of life in the life phenomena of creation, growth and extinction described through the developed stage of changing. Through this study, I have come to the conclusion that Charles Simonds' works have the formative characteristics, peculiarities of the primitive, the power of life and social message.
