Nancy Graves 작품에 관한 연구

Abstract

As the bronze objects of bottle gourds and vegetation, the motiff of Nancy Graves's works, are the "found object" comparable with paper collage or the assemblage of daily matters in modernism, it is required to make a research as to what formative characteristics the world of Nancy Graves's works has, as Nancy Graves's works based. This study, basing the foundation of art on nature, is meaningful in making a research as to what formative characteristics Nancy Graves's works representing the diversity of forms - by combining natural forms with industrial forms - have. The purpose of this study consists in identifying the formative characteristics of Nancy Graves's sculptural works through their subjectire analysis. In realison to the contents of this study this paper analyzed by classfying Nancy Graves's worksas three characteristics by their subjectsrepresentation based on camels, maps and archetectures, natural forms such as animals and plants and ready made forms. With requrd to the mathod of this study this paper set down literature and works concerning her as a basic instrucment for this study, and inquired into the retical background through literature of her works and monthly magazines. With regard to the smpling of works for this study the total of 62 works, in which the formative characteristics of Nancy Graves's works are well represented are sampledas a targetand then analyzed. The results obtained in analyzing Nancy Graves's works are as follows : 1. In realation to the characteristics of repsentation based on camels, N. Graves produced works with emphasis on the naturalistic image characteristic of organism as the symboic images of nature with the sense of vividness the effdct of continuous repetition was put to use in this period. Interests in process, the important sources of the representational method and representational contents, were emohasized not only through the analysis of concrete objects but through the organic connection of nature such as their erection. 2. The reprentational contents based upon achaedogical understandings such as ocean, soil ancient structure, etc were formed in the symbolic and descriputive forms incorporating concrete contents. At this period he concretized symbolic shapes with mass and color and analyzed the qulitiies of the contents inherent in the forms. 3. The interpolation of divers found objects represented the effect of voluntary shapes in space as well as the entire effect of the work that associated poetic composition. In the configuration of each object she represented a harmonious space of the work in an unstable state by balancing it on the foundation of a stable base, and making imaginary solid space created by the fixed location of forms from the fixed location through the application of unstable confronting relarionship such hinge joint. Decorative and irregular colouring on the surface of the components of a work provided a sense of tension and a sense of unity for the entire form stemming from the configuration of different objects and created image of color eliminated. The effect of color eliminated the sense of material, which represented a weighlless image.;object미술에 대한 새로운 시각과 함께 Nancy Graves의 작품소재인 호리병박과 식물의 청동 object들은 modernism의 종이 collage나 일상품들의 assemblage에 비교할만한 '발견된 object'라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 유기적인 object를 제시하고 있는 Nancy Graves의 작품이 주제별로 어떤 조형적 특성을 갖고 있는지를 연구할 필요가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 N.Graves의 작품을 주제별로 분석하여 조형적 특성을 고찰해 보는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 N.Graves 작품을 주제별로 나누어, 낙타를 주제로 한 표현, 지도 및 건축물을 주제로 한 표현, 그리고 동·식물의 자연물과 ready-made를 주제로 한 표현 등 3가지 특성으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 단행본, 작품전목록, 월간지 등의 문헌과 작품을 기본도구로 하였다. N. Graves의 작품을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 낙타를 주제로 한 표현의 특성과 관련하여 N.Graves는 화석, 골조각, 낙타의 상징적 image등을 표현내용으로 하여 유기체적 특성의 자연주의적 image에 중점을 두어 작품을 제작하였다. 그리고 N.Graves는 생동감 있는 자연의 image를 표현하기 위해 연속적인 반복의 효과를 주는 표현방법을 사용했다. 표현방법과 표현내용의 중요한 원천인 과정에 대한 관심은 구체적 대상의 분해를 통해서 뿐만 아니라 추상화된 image의 지각과, 그것의 다양한 설치방법과 같은 자연의 유기적 연결성을 통해 강조되었다. 2. 지도 및 건축물을 주제로 한 표현의 특성은 大洋, 지도, 고대건축물등 고고학적 이해에 근거한 표현내용과 함께, 구체적인 내용을 담고있는 상징적이고 서술적인 형태로 조형화 되었다. 특히 이와 관련하여 N.Graves는 질감과 색채를 통해 상징적인 형상을 구체화하면서 형태가 갖는 내용적 특성을 강조했다. 3. 동.식물의 자연물과 ready-made를 주제로 한 표현과 관련하여, 상이한 object들의 竝置는 시적인 구성을 연상시키는 작품의 전체적 효과와 공간에서 자율적 형상의 효과를 통해 표현되었다. 각 object들의 구성에 있어 안정감있는 base를 토대로 하여 작품이 균형을 이루게 했고, hinge joint와 같은 불안정한 대립관계의 적용을 통해 형태들이 임의적으로 고정 위치에서 벗어나 가상적인 입체공간을 형성하게 하므로써 불균형속의 조화된 공간을 표현하였다. 구성요소들에 대한 표면의 장식적이고 불규칙한 채색을 통해 상이한 구성으로부터 기인하는 전체형태에 긴장감과 통일감이 형성되었고 전체적으로 조화된 하나의 색채 image가 창출되었다. 이 경우에서 색채의 효과는 소재감을 제거시키며, 그것은 무중량성의 image를 나타내 주고 있다.
