사회적 의미의 일러스트레이션

Abstract

사회의 단면을 보여주는 사회예술로서의 일러스트레이션은 그 사회가 당면한 문제를 시각화하며 문제에 대한 진지한 사고를 확대해 나갈 수 있도록 이해를 돕는 대중전달매체로서의 기능을 갖는다. 따라서 일러스트레이션은 작가개인의 만족을 위한 것이 아닌 사회적 필요에 의한 작업으로, 뚜렷한 목적과 대상에 의한 발상으로부터 이루어진다. 이같은 작업에 임하는 일러스트레이터는 소리없는 언어로써 사회의 유익한 변화를 위한 올바른 시각환경을 제공함으로써 급변하는 현대 사회발전에 따라 상실되어 가는 인간성을 회복시키려는 역할을 갖는다. 또한 그는 사회에 대한 봉사자로써 현실은 직시하고 대중으로 하여금 개선된 시각환경을 영위할 수 있도록 이끌어 나가는 책임을 갖는다. 현대 시각예술에 있어서 사회적 기능이 점차 부각되고 있는 사회예술로서의 일러스트레이션은 현대의 사회문제를 시사성있는 시각언어로 대중과 사회에 전달하는 역할자로서의 중요성이 새롭게 인식되고 있다. 사회적 통념, 경제적 원인등 복합적인 문제로 인해 자유롭지 못했 던 한국 일러스트레이션의 활동영역을 최근, 출판관계자의 새로운 인식과 신진 일러스트레이터의 활발한 참여를 계기로 대중전달 매제로써의 독자적 영역을 차지하게 되었다. 이와같이 일러스트레이션이 한국 사회언어로서의 새로운 위치를 잡아 가고 있는 추세와는 달리 진정한 한국의 현실을 주제로 하는 일러스트레이션은 크게 부족한 실정이다. 현대 한국사회는 급속한 산업화로, 새로운 물질문명의 혜택과 안락하고 풍요로운 생활을 보장받게 된 반면, 그로 인해 파생된 한국인의 전통적 가치관의 혼란과 전통문화부재 현상이 심화, 팽배해지고 사회 각 분야에 걸쳐 사회병리 현상이 만연되게 되었다. 이러한 문제를 치유하기 위해 사회 각 분야에서 다각적인 해결방안이 모색되기도 하였지만, 대개는 서구사회의 입장에서 우리의 문제를 다루어왔기 때문에 추상적인 방향만을 제시했을 뿐 직접적인 도움이 되지 못하였다. 본 연구자는 이러한 오류를 새롭게 인식하고, 현대 한국사회의 보편적인 사회문제를 의식화하여 종래 서구의 시각표현을 지양하는 대신, 간접적이고 은유적인 시각언어로 시사성있는 일러스트레이션(Journalistic-Illustration)을 제작함으로써 제작자와 감상자가 함께 한국의 사회현실을 새로이 인식하고 사고하는 계기를 마련하고자 하였다.;Illustration, as a social art, plays the role of mass media by visualizing the host of problems facing a society and by encouraging the members to ponder seriously on the subjects. Illustration, therefore, is more than the work of an individual. An answer to societal demand, it has very concrete goals and objects. An illustrator needs to be armed with the right vision of the reality in which he or she lives. He or she has to lead the general public to a better life, help them respond in proper manner to the changing environment, and warn against the loss or humanity and other unfavorable side effects. Korea has seen during the past few years the gradual emergence of illustration as an independent genre of mass communications, owing largely to the awakening of illustrators and publishers to its social function. Ironically, however, illustrations, as a means of social communications, have not yet bloomed in this country. Very few Korean illustrators deal with the double--faced reality of their country--the material affluence and comfort stemming from the rapid industrialisation on one hand, and the dwindling, if not collapse, of the traditional value and culture on the other, among other things. Some illustrators have touched on these issues, but usually on a superficial level, and from the viewpoint of their Western counterparts. Amid the rising recognition of illustrations' social function, illustrators are again urged to serve as the messenger of visual language, bringing the current problems right in the face of the spectators and provoking their meditation and solution. This writer tries to attract the viewers' attention to the problems hampering the rapidly-changing Korean society through the traditional Korean-style journalistic illustrations which are indirect, metaphoric and timely.
