사이_공간에서 유동하는 정체성 연구

Abstract

I could not recognize myself when I involved in the forest, after I shifted to the chosen place. I therefore found myself of moving between two cultures and generating the identity in flux through the event of shift in short, the being of mirror. I have started to pour my inspirations onto my works surrounded by questions addressing new cultural identities, advancing mobility, as well as the questioning and changing of locations under the influence of migration at time of adolescent, are never-ending themes to me. I am interested in the state of myself moving between two categories. I consider the place left behind ("there") or the adopted place ("here"), or their interactions. The displaced I retain an emotional connection with the place left behind; indeed, the resonance of the original place is often enhanced and intensified by distance. At the same time, I am forging a new hybrid identity that draws on the physical surroundings and cultural climate of the new place. If alters that the two dimensional condition is called "in_betweenness" by a theorist Homi Bhabah to the three dimensional space, I found myself of absorbing into delimited space or sometimes be isolated from. I do not perfectly involve in one monolithic category. However, from a certain point of time, I wish to pull out myself of moving to hither and tither, thinking randomly in view of multi- perspectives rather than generating and moving within one fixed point. I wish to peer the veil and expose about 'the identity in flux'. Globalization has increased the experience of migrancy, altering relations between Western and other cultures and the sense of identity of individuals whose lives have taken them across the borders between First, Second, and Third Worlds, or across, in effect, postmodern societies. It suggests a fluid personal, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural identity. Contemporary identities can therefore be fluid or consciously delimited. 'Nomadism' can be selected to describe as one of cultural codes for this kind of current. Displacement therefore is one of the central facts of contemporary culture and art. I will explore how the fluid identity is engaged with and expressed in my work. My work is more about what happens in the middle of two different cultures caused by shifting. Firstly, I will analyze about the terms of absorption and isolation based on the concept of segmented assimilation theory. Rather to be soaked up in monolithic category of culture, ceaselessly crossing over two cultures and generating new hybrid identity at in_between space. I am dealing with the acculturation theory, while two cultures are blending and absorbing into, immigrants in subordinated position experience so-called 'glass-ceiling'. Secondly, shuttling process can be extracted from the in_between space. This process means that as like a shuttle bus comes and goes from a certain point to a certain destination. I distinguish the movement between two cultures to 'back and forth' /'hither and thither'. The 'back and forth' movement focuses on the movement from inside to outside and from back to forth through an intermediary existence. The 'hither and thither' movement is a metaphor of my identity that is moving ceaselessly towards here and there at in_between space. Thirdly, the movement of 'back and forth'/'hither and thither' in the process of shuttling can be described as the structure of rhizome and the lines of flight. The rhizomic structured lines of flight identified in my works itself assumes very diverse forms, from ramified surface extension in all directions to concretion into multiple centers. In other words, it leads current of mobility and forms randomly extended networks without fixing at a certain point of area. The fluid identity and the features of rhizome lines can be linked to explain. The forces that influence the construction of identity are not stable, and thus identity itself is always in flux. Because identity is largely determined by outside influences, it is fluid and transformable as the context changes. Identities must also be described as at times shifting, and, like culture, must be conceived of as always being in a state of process of absorbing or conflict. The in_between space happened by the process, generates and encircles, binds in, and can be crossed. The in_between space holds up full of potentials and possibilities, overflows of experiments and play. I more like to go in close to the works based on above theories and suggest my works and analyze, then look for development directions and possibilities in an advance.;그 숲속에 있었을 때는 그 숲을 보지 못했다. 그 숲을 벗어나 선택된 공간으로 이동하였을 때 즉, 이동이라는 거울과 같은 존재를 통해 비로소 사이_공간에서 유동하는 정체성을 볼 수 있었다. 사춘기 시절에 겪은 이민으로 인해 두 문화 사이를 넘나드는 배경을 갖게 되었다. 남겨진 공간에서 선택된 공간으로 이동함에 조명한다. 또한 상호작용에 대하여 그리고 남겨진 공간과의 감정적인 교류에 대해 살펴보고자한다. 본인은 다른 지리적 환경과 새로운 공간의 문화적 기후에 의존하여 새롭게 만들어진 움직이는 정체성이라고 본다. 이러한 상태를 호미 바바(Homi Bhabha)는 “in_betweenness"라고 부른다. 본인은 그 사이_공간을 넘나들며 빨려 들어가기도 했으며 때론 이질적 문화에 따르는 갈등으로 인해 본인을 밀어내기도 했다. 어딘가 무한하게 본인을 흡수케 했으며 때론 고정된 곳에서 벗어나 자유스럽게 날게 하였다. 본인은 어느 한 곳에 완전히 소속되어 있지 않다. 본인은 고정된 민족, 국가와 지역적 정체성을 넘어서 유동적인 문화적 배경이 작업의 모티브로 나타나게 됨을 알게 되었고 유동하는 정체성에 대해 본 논문에서 베일을 벗겨 펼쳐 보이고자 한다. 세계화의 바람은 견고했던 국가의 경계들을 뒤흔들며 개방하여 넘나듦을 초래하고 서양의 문화와 그리고 타국의 문화와 포스트모던사회를 접하며 바꿔가는 관계 속에 살아가기 때문에 유동적인 성격과 민족적 배경과 언어 그리고 문화적 배경을 가지고 왔다. 이러한 동시대의 정체성은 하나의 문화코드인 ‘유목주의’로 바라볼 수 있으며 따라서 이동은 동시대 문화와 예술에 주요한 요소 중 하나이다. 이러한 유동하는 정체성이 본인의 작업에서 어떻게 연계되고 표현되었는지 탐구하고자한다. 유동하는 정체성을 다루는데 있어 본인은 이동에 따라 두 문화의 사이_공간에서 일어난 해프닝(happening)의 상태 그것자체의 중점을 두었다. 첫째로 작품에서 보이는 두 문화 사이_공간에서 스며듦과 유리됨의 반복과정을 분절동화론을 중심으로 그 특성에 대해 논하고자한다. 흠뻑 하나의 문화의 카테고리에 젖어있지 않고 사이_공간에서 끊임없이 누빔은 새로운 혼성의 상태의 정체성을 초래했다. 그리고 두 문화 사이에서 이러한 과정을 겪으며 어찌하여도 넘을 수 없는 유리장벽을 경험하며 소외감과 상실에 빠지게 되는 문화적응과정을 다룬다. 둘째, 사이_공간을 떠내어 보았을 때 셔틀링 프로세스(shuttling process)를 볼 수 있다. 이 방법은 셔틀버스가 왕복하는 것처럼 어느 곳에서 어느 곳으로 왕복하는 과정이라 할 수 있다. 본문에서 ‘back and forth’는 매개적 존재를 통해 접근하여 앞/뒤, 안과 밖으로 넘나들며 풀어가는 이야기이며, 풀어가고 ‘hither and thither’는 사이_공간에서 끊임없이 여기저기로 넘나드는 움직임을 말한다. 셋째, 작업에서 보이는 셔틀링 프로세스의 앞/뒤, 여기저기의 움직임을 살펴보면 탈주하는 선이 구조와 형태 그리고 개념 면에서 리좀(rhizome)적인 특징을 볼 수 있다. 따라서 리좀 유형의 탈주선, 즉 본인의 작업에서 보이는 유동하는 정체성에서 비롯된 움직임의 선들은 무한히 증식하고 뻗어나가는 탈 코드화. 탈 영토화된 흐름들의 배치로서, 단일한 중심이 없는 다중심적 네트워크를 구성하는데 이것은 리좀의 특징과 연결하여 설명한다. 유동적 흐름위에 놓인 정체성, 그리고 항상 스며듦과 갈등의 과정에서 비롯된 유동하는 정체성은 사이_공간을 발생하고 둘러싸여있으며, 연결되어 있고 넘나듦을 초래한다. 사이_공간은 다음 움직임에 대한 선택과 결정이 이루어져야할 지점으로서 가능성과 잠재적인 힘으로 충만해 있으며 실험과 유희가 넘쳐흐르는 공간이다. 아직 갇혀있는 공간의 디스플레이에서 벗어나 유동적이며 개방적인 공간으로 나아가 작품을 설치하여 보다 마음을 움직이는 의미전달과 다양한 발전방향을 전개해야할 과제가 남아있다.
