Abstract
The present study examined factors that influence transfer beteen two problems which have similar (homomorphic) problem states. Two experiments were conducted to explore the importance of problem structure and strategy in association with the transfer effect. Both the Jealous Husbands(JH) and the Missionary-Cannibal(MC) problems were used the present experiments. Experiment 1 test the effect of problem structure in asymmetric transfer between two problems. Each states of two problems were equally presented move alternatives - both legal and illegal moves - in solution processes. This manipulation would minimize structural difference was caused by additional pair constraint in Jealous Husbanas problem. A total of 60 subjects were tested, subjects were required to solve two problems(MC/JH), and thirty subjects were randomly assinged to each problem order condition(MC-JH/JH-MC). The data was summarized by recoding the number of total legal moves, the number of illegal moves. and the time required to solve each problem. The results from experiment 1 were used in a two-factor analysis of variance one factor was the type of problem (MC/JH) and the second factor was the problem order (MC-JH/JH-MC). Experiment 2 tested whetherstrategy factor affects the lack of transfer between two problems. Using another strategy depends on if the subgoals were presented or not in source problem. The MC-problem was used as source problem, and JH-problem was used as target problem Atotal of 108 subjects were randomly assinged to control, means-ends analysis, structural subgoal, and random subgoal strategy conditions. The data for each subject was same in experiment 1, and one factor was the type of stragegy. The data of results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA in each problem, and post hoc test(Tukey-test) as supplementary method. The resulets were: 1. In experiment 1, the differential effects of transfer were shown for the number of illegal moves and solution time. The number of illegal moves declined significantly from JH_1 to JH_2, but declined slightly from MC_1 to MC_2. This result reflects the combined floor effect and practice effect. The analysis for the solution time was revealed that transfer occured beteen MC and JH-problem when the JH-problem was given first. 2. In experiment 2, subjects in the control condition without source problem trial and the means-ends analysis strategy condition required more illegal moves and more solving both source and target problem All two experiments tested whether the prior solution of a problem would lead to a significant transfer of performance in solving a second problem. Although move alternatives were equally given, difference in generating and legality test of move was not removed. A certain kind of strategy turned out to be more effective in prolblem-solving, learning, and transfer than others.
