승무의 형성에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 굴절된 한국무용사의 회복을 위한 민속무용연구의 역사적 맥락에서의 접근의 일환으로, 승무의 형성과정에 관한 하나의 모형을 제시하고자 하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 1900년대 이후의 승무는 1900년대 초에는 각종 가설극장 무대에서, 1910년대 이후에는 기생조합과 권번과 같은 곳에서 연회되고 학습되었는데 이 때 전국의 춤사범들은 대부분 남자들로 판소리의 고수이거나 재인청 출신의 사람들이었고 이들이 어려서도 승무를 추었던 것으로 보아 승무가 1900년대 이전에 무계(巫系)의 재인들에 의해 이미 추어지고 있었다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 1960년대 후반 이후에 나타나기 시작하는 승무의 기원설로는 (1)불교의식무 기원설 (2)민속무용으로서의 기원설 (3)기방예술기원설이 있는데 각각의 기원설들을 승무의 실제와 관련하여 비교해본 결과 승무가 불교의 영향력하에서 민속무용으로서 발전했을 가능성이 큰 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 궁중여악을 제외한 민속 예능의 주된 연회계층인 재인과 사당을 조선조 불교의 흐름과 관련하여 살펴보았는데 이로써 승무의 형성과정에 대한 하나의 모형을 유추할 수 있었다. 즉 19세기경에는 무계의 재인들에 의해 승무와 유사한 형태의 춤이 이미 추어지고 있었는데 경기지역 산대놀이에 포함되어 있던 애사당 법고놀이나 상좌춤의 영향을 받아 이 춤에 법고부분이 결합되어 춤부분과 법고부분으로 구성되는 지금의 형태를 갖추게 된 것으로 보인다. 무계의 재인들이 이보다 조금 앞선 시기에 완성시킨 것으로 보이는 음악 형식인 산조의 장단 전개 방식으로 미루어 볼 때 승무에 있어 법고의 결합은 음악적 완성도를 높이기 위해 필요했을 것으로 보인다. 이처럼 창작에서 비롯하고 발전하여 오늘날 전통으로 이어져 오고있는 승무의 형성과 발전과정이 갖는 무용사적 의의를 보면 첫째 우리춤에서 외세의 영향력을 배제하더라도 내부에서 자체적으로 예술적인 형태로 발전했을 가능성이 있었다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 둘째 한국무용사에 있어 외세에 의한 근대화나 일제의 침략기는 한국무용사 단절의 원인이 아니라 단순한 변화의 요인일 뿐임을 알 수 있었다. 1960년대 이후 민속학에 있어 전통의 개념은 '객관적으로 실체'가 아니라 '현재에 상징적으로 구성된 주관적인 관점'이라 여겨지게 되었는데 이는 승무의 형성 및 발전 과정을 통해 보더라도 유사하게 적용될 수 있어 보인다. 따라서 과거로부터 전승발전 된 민속무용으로서의 승무는 지속적으로 보존 계승되어야 하지만 이것을 실체도 알 수 없는 전통이란 관념의 잣대로 사용하는 것은 지양되어야 할 것이고 관념으로부터 자유로와질때 우리의 무용활동 역시 진일보 할 수 있을 것이다.;This paper has a purpose of suggesting a model of the process of forming a Buddist dance as a part of the historical approach of folk dance study for recovering refracted Korean dance history. A Buddist dance since 1900's was performed and learned in the various stages of theatres in early 1900's and in a Ki-saeng call office in 1910's. At that time, dancers in the whole country were mostly men who were a master of pansori or from performer's office, and it is proven that a Buddist dance was already being played by performers in dance field before the 1900's. Views about the origin of Buddist dance appearing after late 1960's are (1) Buddist ritual dance origin (2) origin as a folk dance (3) local art origin, and it toms out that a Buddist dance developed as a folk dance under the influerce of Buddism as a result of comparing each origin view with an actual Buddist dance. Accordingly, I could analogize a model of the process of forming a Buddist dance by examining performers, who were the major class of folk art except court music and temples relating to Buddism in Chosun dynasty. That is a dance similar with a Buddist dance was performed by performers in dance field in the 19th century, and it seems that it was influenced by Aesadang BupgoNori or Sangjwa dance included in Kyounggi province SandaeNori and become to have today's form which is made up of dance part and Bupgo part. Considering the introduction, development, turn and conclusion of Sanjo, a musical form which seems to be completed by performers in dance field a little bit earlier than this, combination with Bupgo in a Buddist dance might have been needed to elevate musical completeness. The meanings of the process of forming and developing a Buddist dance in dance history are first, there is a possibility that it developed as its own art, excluding the influence of foreign power in our dance, and second, modernization by foreign power or Japanese colonization period are not the reason of discontinuing Korean dance history but Just a factor of change. The concept of tradition in folk study since 1960's was considered not to exist objectively but to be a subjective point of view symbolically composed in the present, and it can be applied similarly through the shaping and developing of a Buddist dance. Accordingly, a Buddist dance as a folk dance developed from the past should be continuously reserved and succeeded, but this should not be used by the measure of a concept, tradition, so I expect our dance activity will make progress when it is freed from a concept.
