Abstract
This study analyzes Buddhist dance, the one of the representative traditional dances in Korea, from the structural aspect on the basis of Laban's movement analysis theory and derives the characteristics of its movement. To attain the purpose of this study, I studied the origin, the sort and its history of the music and the costume of Buddhist dance and Laban's concept of structural analysis surveying the related documents. For its practical analysis I investigated the video materials and learned the Buddhist dance by myself from the viewpoint of Laban's structural analysis method. The structural analysis method is applied to its five elements - body, time, weight, space and respiration. The results form the analysis are suggested below. First, the structural characteristics of Buddhist dance from the aspect of body Is that the combination between left and right movement is well balanced and upper and lower part of body are in natural coordination. Second, the outcome of the analysis of time shows that the characteristic of Buddhist dance is composed of very slow movements whose ratio between movement and beat is smaller than average ratio 1:1. Thirdly, the outcome of the analysis of weight shows that the dancer keeps himself in lower posture than middle of his body. It displays stable and strong shape with heavy and serious movement. Fourth, the characteristics which appeared in aspect of space is that the dancer's movement is mainly constant vertical actions centering around middle height of standing posture but sometimes the vertical movement grows big and makes a line of movement. Coincidently his actions turn toward every directions but the range of his movement is not wide. These spacial characteristics displays a dynamic movement of the dance. Fifth, the analysis of respiration shows that the length of breathing out and breathing in and its adjustment are connected with the movements of every parts of body. This means that the respiration becomes a foundation to initialize the movement of other parts of body and plays an important role in building up a dynamic shape. Synthetically the characteristics in Buddhist dance is composed of the slow movement of lower part of body with low posture straining the abdomen and the dynamic, powerful and free actions of arms and the balanced movements of head and arms accompanied by shoulder and chest with respiration. These actions are closely related and are unified into harmony accentuating a movement by a certain part of body which gives us the deep taste of Korean traditional dance. Such movements represent well the motions of stretching vs bending, accentuating vs hiding and the principle of 3 times in large and 3 times in small. And the respiration controls the foundation of the every actions with straining the abdomen and it becomes the motive power to make harmony among all the separate parts of body. Thus Buddhist dance lays more stress on the slow and composed movements than on the rapid variation or speedy progress of dance, which realizes the elegant and significant dance. Besides the curves formed by the movement of the dance reaches at every possible directions and space on the stage and it displays the typical principle of Korean dance - 3 times forward and 3 times backward - on the basis of such a principle the dance proceeds toward more complicated steps. Likewise, as results of the analysis above, we may conclude that the technique and modes of traditional Korean dance are concentrated on Buddhist dance. This kind of study is the work to generalize the characteristic of the dance by investigation the facts and suggests concrete and practical materials. The structural analysis method of Laban gives us the clue to solve the ambiguous problems that happened in precedent studies providing a tools to grasp the objective and scientific characteristics to the movements and it may broaden our understandings about our dance.
