Abstract
The present study is to examine the effects of counselor's verbal response and client's level of anxiety on effectiveness of counseling. For the purpose of the present study, the counselor's verbal responses are manipulated self-involving statement which is based on humanistic psychology and descriptive statement based on psychoanalytic psychology. Both statements are conditioned positively. And then this study tried to show what differences might be resulted in by evaluating client's perception of counselor and session. And also, in these evaluations, differences between high level of anxiety group and low level of anxiety group was examined. A total of 100 female college students were preselected as subjects by Anxiety Scale, and then divided into two groups, which were high or low level for anxiety. Subjects in both the high-and low-anxiety groups were randomly assigned to one of two experimental conditions: self-involving condition and descriptive condition. Subjects listened to one of the audio-taped counseling session and then rated the Counselor Rating Form, Session Evaluation Questionaire, and post questionaire. Data were analyzed according to a 2 (self-involving vs descriptive) × 2 (high-anxious vs low-anxious) factorial design. The results of this study are as follows. First, in evaluating counselor, subjects perceived more highly the counselor's general and personal attractiveness in the self-involving condition than in the descriptive condition. Second, in evaluating session, subjects rated deeper, more smooth, and more positive in the self-involving response than in the descriptive response. Third, the subjects who have low level of anxiety than high level of anxiety perceived more highly the counselor's general and personal attractiveness. Fourth, the subjects who have low level of anxiety than high level of anxiety evaluated the session deeper and more positive. The results of the present study showed that counselor's self-involving response than descriptive response has an important effect on counseling outcome and also when client's level of anxiety is low, which has an positive effect on effectiveness of counseling outcome.
