Abstract
This thesis shows how the choreographers have seen and interpreted the ritual elements represented in the works of dancing these days drawing on the "Le Sacre du Printemps" and the "Apollo" "Dionysos". It clarifies the fact that these ritual aspects are piped through the choreographer's intent and have been transformed into creative forms. Instead of being merely passed down as they were. In Chapter Ⅱ, we examine the theoretical background of rituals drawing on the definition, function, forms, and the historical change of them. In chapter Ⅲ, we will see the connection of rituals and art, and them find out the ritual aspects and elements reflected on the works of dancing. Dancing is playing an important role in the meeting of God and Man not only in ancient rituals but also these days. In rituals, dancing has purified human emotions and been a catalyzer in life, further more, supplied a power unifying social members. Like this, dancing was based on ancient rituals and created into the "art of dance" by artists. They have changed the shamanism, which is dissolved in ritual, into modern sensation and developed creative style individually. We can see, this tendency from 20th century choreographers, - Paul Taylor, Jose Limon, Jerome Robbins, Antong Tudor, Anna Sokolow, Erick Hawkins, Alwin Nikolais. Maurice Bejart. This tendency becomes more important, when we see that it will be discussed among the audience and critics as well as choreographers. The summeries of the ritual aspects of the "Le Sacre do Printemps" and the "Apollo" "Dionysos" are as follow: 1. In "Le Sacre du Printemps", Nijinsky attaches divinity to eternal rocks and describes them as the place of rituals. 2. We can see some sensual movements in Nijinsky and Bejart's choreographers praying for fertility. 3. The oldster who leads the people participating in the rituals is identified with the shaman as medium of the earth and heaven. 4. They are characteristic of sacrificial forms in view of the girls dedicated to the ritual pedestal. 5. In the "Apollo", we can regard the touch of hands of "Apollo" and three muses as the ritual choreography based on Greek mural paintings. 6. In the "Apollo" and "Dionysos", God, an object being prayed is used as a material. Taking into· consideration The ritual aspects of the "Apollo" and the "Le Sacre du Printemps and "Dionysos" we can conclude that these aspects are reflected on these works after being filtered through the choreographer's intent. That is, we can interpret why ballet's retualism is coming to the front from the following points. One is that it is a repulse against the romantic and fantastic content tailored to the nobility's taste. The other is that it is escaping from the mannerism in the past and becoming on earthly and realistic being based on the masses. Therefore, it has been transformed into a liberal form that Bejart pursued and new technics as well as human expression are more necessary in this complicated and unintelligible society. This is the very ritualism represented in the ancient rituals and also what has been seeked for by Nijinsky, Balanchine, Bejart in an attempt to escape from the worldliness in the modern times. The experimental spirit has been the origin of the modern ballet and should be continued more and more in the future.
