Abstract
This study was designed to examine factors that influence transfer between two problems which have similiar(homomorphic) problem states. Two experiments were carried out to explore the importance of mapping between two problems. Experiment 1 was performed to find out whether the transfer from Missionary-Cannibal problem(MC) to Jealous Husbands problem( JH) was caused by strategy shift or subgoal mapping. In order to test these two hypotheses, subgoal conditions were made on the basis of one-to-one subgoal mapping or one-to-many subgoal mapping. A total of 126 subjects participated in experiment 1 and subjects were required to solve two problems(MC/JH). Different subgoals were presented according to subgoal conditions(systematic/ half systematic/ random) while solving the MC problem and the performance on JH problem was compared to measure the transfer effect. The legal move, illegal move and solution time was used as dependent variables. The data was analyized by one-way-ANOVA according to the problem type and post-hoc test(Tukey-test) was used as a supplementary method. Experiment 2 was carried out to test subgoal mapping hypothesis and constraint learning hypothesis. Subjects in the higher constraint learning condition had to solve MC-(5,3) problem as a source problem which has stronger constraint, and subjects in the lower constraint learning condition had to solve MC-(3,2) with systematic subgoals presented as a source problem. Both conditions solved JH problem as a target problem and the performance on that problem was compared between the two conditions. A total of 68 subjects participated in experiment 2 and the subjects were randomly assigned to both conditions. The data was analyized by using T-test. The results were: 1. In experiment 1, subjects in the systematic condition solved both the source and target problem with the least illegal moves and in the shortest solution time. Subjects in the random condition made the most illegal moves and required the longest solution time. Subjects in the half systematic condition showed intermediate performance between those two conditions. This result corresponds to the predictions made by the subgoal mapping hypothesis. 2. In experiment 2, subjects in the lower constraint learning condition presented with systematic subgoals when solving the source problem solved the target problem with less illegal moves and solution time than subjects in the higher constraint learning condition. Therefore, the two experiments provide evidence for the subgoal mapping hypothesis.
