Claes Oldenburg와 Richard Serra의 soft 조각과 hard 조각의 비교연구

Abstract

현대의 풍부한 물질 공급은 조각 재료 선택의 범위를 넓혀 놓았다. 조각가가 특정한 재료를 선택할 때는 어떤 동기에 의한 것인가? 지금과 같은 재료의 홍수 속에서 작업하는 조각가들은 한번쯤 생각해 볼 문제이다. 본 연구는 미국에서 1960년대 부터 현재까지 활동해온 Claes Oldenburg와 Richard Serra의 조각을 Soft 재료와 Hard 재료로 만들어진 것으로 분류하여 비교함으로써 조형적 특성을 규명하는데 의의가 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 미국에서 1960년대 부터 현재까지 활동해 온 C. Oldenburg와 R. Serra의 Soft 재료와 Hard 재료에 따른 조각의 조형적 특성을 비교하는데 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 C. Oldenburg와 R, Serra의 Soft 재료와 Hard 재료 조각을 비교하기 위해 두 작가의 작품을 Soft 재료와 Hard 재료를 사용한 것으로 분류하여 조형 의도, 재료, 기법, 색채, 양식, 설치 장소 등을 관점으로 비교 연구하였다. 본 연구의 방법은 문헌, Catalogue, 작품을 기본 도구로 하였다. 작품 표집은 C. Oldenburg와 R. Serra의 작품 중에서 1961년 부터 1990년까지의 조각 작품을 유연한 재질의 재료와 견고한 재질의 재료로 만들어진 조각으로 구분하여 C. Oldenburg의 작품중 각각 23점씩, R. Serra의 작품중 각각 23점씩 총 92점을 대상으로 목적표출하였다. 자료 처리는 Soft재료와 Hard재료로 분류하여 두 작가의 조형 주관과 직접 관련되는 조형 의도, 재료, 기법, 색채, 양식, 설치 장소를 관점으로 비교하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 조형 의도 면에서 C. Oldenburg는 대중과 친밀한 조작을 표현하고자한 것이고 R. Serra는 조가과 공간과 감상자를 상호 교류시키고자한 것이다. 2. 재료 선택 면에서 C. Oldenburg는 대중이 친밀감을 느낄 수 있는 일상 생활에서 흔히 쓰이는 대중적인 소재를 조각에 사영하였고, R. Serra는 대량 생산되는 기성의 공업 제품을 물질성을 강조하여 그대로 사용함으로써 제작 과정과 공간이 만들어내는 새 공간을 가망자가 지각하도록 하였다. 3. 기법 면에서 C. Oldenburg는 사실적인 표현과 장식적 효과를 낸 반면 R. Serra는 바닥, 벽, 천정, 대지에 고정시켜 능동적으로 공간에 작용 하도록 하였다. 4. 색채 면에서 C. Oldenburg는 object가 갖는 실제의 색채를 사용하여 시각적인 효과를 강조하는 방법으로 사물의 형태나 이미지를 부각시켰고, R. Serra는 재료의 원래 색을 사용하여 선입견 없는 상태의 조각을 제시하였다. 5. 양식 면에서 C. Oldenburg는 대중에게 익숙한 구상 형태를, R. Serra는 단순한 추상형을 공간 속에 설치하여 형태를 표현하기 보다 제작 과정과 조각이 만들어 내는 공간을 표현하고자 했다. 6. 설치 장소로는 C. Oldenburg의 경우 대중이 손쉽게 접할 수 있는 공간을 선택했고, R. Serra는 전시 장소를 조각의 구성 요소로 보고 감상자가 직접 걸어다니면서 작품과 공간을 체험하도록 하여 공간적인 요소를 강조하였다.;The abundant material offering of modern time widened the range of sculpture material. When the sculptor chooses the specific material, which motive does make him(or her) do it? It is the question that the sculptors who work in the flood of material like now must think once at least. The significance of his study is to classify the sculptures of Claes Oldenburg and Richard Serra who have acted from 1960s up to now in America into what was made ofsoft material and what was made of hard material and compare them and to examine the feature closely. The purpose of this study is to compare and study the sculptures of soft material and hard material of C. Oldenburg and R. Serra who have acted from 1960s up to now in America. As for the contents of this study, this researcher compare and study from the viewpoint of modeling intention, material, techinique, color, style, installation place by classifying the works of C. Oldenburg and R. Serra into what is made of soft material and what is made of hard material, so as to compare the sculptures of soft material and hard material of them. As for the method of this study, literature, catalogue and work were made as the basic instruments. As for the work sampling, so as to compare and study the works made of soft material and the works made of hard material out of the sculpture works of C. Oldenburg and R. Serra, this researcher classified the sculpture works from 1961 to 1990 into the sculpture of soft material and thesculpture of hard material and sampled total 92 pieces which are 23 pieces out of the works of C. Oldenburg and 23 pieces out ofworks of R. Serra respectively. As for the data handling, this researcher compared from the viewpoint of modeling intention, material, technique, color, style, installation place by classifying into soft material and hard material. The study result is as follows. 1. As for the modeling intention C. Oldenburg, he tried to express the sculpture which is intimate with the populace by widening the range of sculpture from the viewpoint of subject and material. And, R. Serra tried to interchange sculpture, space and appreciator mutually. 2. From the viewpoint of material, C. Oldenburg used the consumptive industrial goods that the populace may feel the intimacy in the sculpture, and R. Serra used the existing industrial goods to be produced in large quantities as they are. Thus, they enabled the appreciator to perceive the new space that the manufacture process, the sculpture and the space make. 3. While C. Oldenburg showed the realistic expression and the decorative effect, R. Serra enabled the fixation on floor, wall, ceiling and ground to act in the space actively. 4. C. Oldenburg embossed the image or form of things by using the practical color of object of the pure colors of red, green, violet, black, & white etc, and R. Serra presented the sculpture in the state where there is no preconception by using the original color that the material has. 5. C. Oldenburg removed the preconception or prejudice by installing the concrete form which is accustomed to the populace in the space, and R. Serra removed it by installing the simple abstract form in the space. 6. C. Oldenburg chose the place as the space that the populace may contact easily. And, R. Serra included the installation place in the work, by making the manufacture place be just the installation palce.
